Description
Hello again Everyone!

Recently as I was playing some Wargame: Red Dragon, I was inspired to slightly modify it's "Second Korean War" premise and scenario into a full-on World War 3 series of Scenarios for CMANO. I've decided to title it "World War 3; 1994" This is the first mission resulting from that idea, but not the first one "Chronologically"

This is currently a WORK-IN-PROGRESS: This mission is fully playable from the American side, but I am currently working on making it playable from the Comientern side

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1989-1990;

The Berlin Wall is torn down as the Iron Curtain falls apart. All of the former Soviet Block states in Eastern Europe have abandoned Communism and the Warsaw Pact. In Europe, the Soviet Union stands alone.

Seeing that Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms will inevitably lead to the dissolution of the Union, a group of party and military leaders overthrow Gorbachev and cease the reforms, saving the Soviet Union from total collapse. While the Union is secure for the moment, they have lost their foothold and most of their power in Europe.

Seeking to retain their position as a world superpower, the Soviet Union improves relations with it's last remaining Communist neighbors, China and North Korea. In return for their renewed friendship and alliance, China and North Korea demand access to the Russian's most advanced military and industrial technologies, while the Soviets get massive economic support from a revived China that recieved back Hong Kong, and additional military support from North Korea; the Soviet Union agrees, and a new world alliance, the revived Comientern, is born.

1991;

Iraq invades Kuwait, thus inviting a massive allied coalition to invade Iraq and utterly destroy their military, called Operation: Desert Storm. Soviet Advisors in the country are given an unprecidented chance to see the most advanced NATO technologies and tactics put to actual combat use, and to see how their own export equipment measures up.
Noting the many deficiencies in their own tech, the Soviet Union and their Comientern allies begin a massive program of rearmament and universal changes to their military technologies and doctrines.

March 1994;

North Korea decides that it is time to re-unify the Korean Peninsula under their rule and launches a massive invasion into the south. Again, an allied coalition is assembled, and deploys to Korea, this time to utterly destroy the Communist North, unlike in 1953. China engages it's own armed forces in the conflict due to "massive external interference", while the Soviets put their western forces on high-alert.

A minor airspace violation by a Finnish jet which lost avionics exploded into an all-out shooting war with the West; World War 3 has begun.

The MAD doctrine has worked all-too well; Nuclear weapons have so far not been used in any form, as all countries are terrified of global apocalypse.
With much of the Allies' frontline military forces in Korea, the North Korean's have been obliterated, but this has allowed for large Soviet and Chinese successes on other fronts.

Additionally, Soviet and Chinese naval forces have broken out of the so-called "Tsushima Pocket" and are running rampant in the Pacific. Chinese and Soviet marines have overrun a number of allied bases on Pacific islands in a manner not-unlike Japan in World War 2.

May 1994;

The Comientern are moving on one of the last major American bases in the Pacific before they can cut off allied reinforcements to Korea and Japan; Midway Atoll. The United States has mustered all that it can to defend the Islands, a large SAM network on Midway, a large marine attack aircraft compliment, a number of nuclear attack subs patrolling the waters, the Missouri and Wisconsin Battleship Battlegroup, and the combined Enterprise Nimitz and Eisenhower CVBG to intercept the Comientern and destroy them...

Once my CVBG finally got close enough, I got a number of Tomcats up to clear the skies, and set all of my forces to converge on the Soviet BBBG.

A few of the Chinese and Soviet subs got sneaky and nearly were able to sink some of my surface ships, but a few SH-60s and S-3s made short work of them.

The air war over Midway was the most intense that I've ever seen or participated in, in CMANO

I ended up playing the latest version; I used the Dallas to herd the Soviet ASuW SAG right into the guns of the Missouri and the Wisconsin, the soviet SAG was crushed between two battleships, an attack sub, and some air support.

I ended up by shear luck getting the Narwal close enough to the Amphib group to open up on it and sink most of the ships.

Portland was sunk by, and simultaneously sunk the Soviet Akula up in the north; but it also drew away the swarm of bees that is the ASW Helos.

Midway and the BBBG were under almost constant air and missile attack from the Soviet CVBG; Midway was struck a couple of times by missiles, and the Perry class in the BBBG taking a Shipwreck to the face and sinking outright; while the Long Beach took a non-critical hit after she ran out of SM-2s from shooting down tons of missiles and jets.

Finished the original version, had a lot of fun! Was finally able to destroy the Carrier group up north, so I sent the Missouri to blow the southern group to shreds. Took a look at the new version, and everything looks good there from a quick glance!

Update: In what was one of the most intense battles I've fought in C:MANO, I was able to use Midway Island's air defenses along with most of my Tomcats (that arrived just in time) to protect my BB Group from the Comintern's ASMs, while I also attacked the Amphib group with HARMs and Harpoons. Sometimes, I had the same F/A-18 shooting HARMs at the Amphib group and AMRAAMs at incoming Anti-Ship Missiles! I was able to disable all but 2 of the escorts for the LSTs, so that group shouldn't be much of an issue. However, the Carrier group continues to close on me, and I've been so far unable to disable any of the carriers. Planning to hit the Carrier group with my next strike and the amphibs with my BB group's Harpoons. This has been a really fun scenario!

at the very least, it will deplete more of the Comintern's defensive missiles

you could always try firing BOL TLAMs from the Battleships at where you think the fleet will be when the TLAMs reach that location....

Air ops changed to "Surge"

ok, makes sense. remember, if you can get the Battleships within gun range of the amphib fleet, they'll sink the entire fleet!

Back at the scenario, the Russian carrier group has absorbed waves on waves of ASMs, and the Amphib group keeps inching closer to Midway. If this next strike can't weaken the Amphib group enough, I'm going to have to thunder run my Battleship group at it, which is pretty suicidal. Guess we will have to see what happens.

When air ops are at sustained, aircraft take 20 hours to rearm, rather than 3-6 hours. This helps quicken the pace of the scenario and adds that feeling of urgency, as you can imagine crews scrambling to fix up an aircraft and get it back into the fight. Also, one can imagine that most of the aircraft are in top shape when preparing for a huge battle like this one.
