History:
The Pusharo petroglyphs are a set of patterns carved into rock walls in the west of the Amazon, Peru, several centuries ago. They represent shapes evoking men, snakes, felines but also geometric and astronomical patterns. Their authors and their initial meaning remain largely unknown today. Vicente de Cenitagoya believed that he recognized biblical scenes in the engraved motifs, an interpretation rejected by all subsequent observers, including the Dominicans. A number of archaeologists agree to attribute these engravings to an Amazonian society rather than to Quechuas of the Inca Empire, but this last hypothesis is still disputed because of Inca artifacts found downstream and legends on a hidden treasure at the arrival of the conquistadors. There is nothing to confirm that all the engravings date from the same period. Today, adventurers continue to claim that the petroglyphs of Pusharo can be read as maps leading to the mythical city of Paititi - whether they consider it Amazonian or Inca.
