Gambler's Fallacy

Description
A simple mod that adds an item into the secret room pool that drops 3 lucky pennies, and then gives a 3+luck% chance, maxing out at 50% at 47 luck, to replace any future coin drop with a lucky penny. Update: chance has been rebalanced to 3+(luck/2)%, maxing at 20% at 34 luck.

This reroll can happen to any coin drop, including nickels, dimes and sticky nickels. This can also happen to any newly created coin from any source, so using a jera, diplopia or crooked penny has a chance to create a luck penny from any normal coin.

I would also like to note that I intended for this item to be a second possible reward from slot machines, rather than a secret room item, but I couldn't figure out a way that wasn't super hacky to do this.
I'm putting this note here just in case - however unlikely it may be - Ed or Tyler see this and want to add it to the game.

Update: I have updated the mod to include loading from JSON and a costume for the item. I may update the page with the associated gif/gifs at some point if I feel like it. I also changed the lucky penny chance cap at AgentCucco's request, and added a chance to drop a coin when using any of the dice items. This chance is 10+(luck*5)%, which means the chance caps at 18 luck. This coin can be a nickel, dime or penny, with nearly equal chance (penny is a 34% chance, nickel and dime are both 33%). Hopefully everyone enjoys the new changes.

Just found out that if you go back to the menu and then continue your run, three new lucky pennies spawn.

@AgentCucco I have changed the odds 3+luck/2%, capping at 20% with 34 luck. I still feel like the effect should max out up at that number, as it is a strong effect, and I plan on making items that utilize higher luck ranges in the future.

I'll update the mod soon, I just need to make a costume and learn how to implement JSON so I can save the rng gen on load from file, so it should be late tonight or early tomorrow.

@AgentCucco Oh, yeah, that does make sense. I just thought it would be a good way of keeping the item from being too strong, as it basically prevents you from getting nickels and dimes past a certain point, but maybe with that amount of luck it doesn't really matter? I'll think about dropping the cap from 50% to something like 20% though, it does seem more fair.

I was thinking on something more like capping it at 10-15% with 5-10 luck for example, 50% is way to big of a chance, and a bit pointless since like I said, most of the luck-based items in the game cap at 20 luck max, so unless you like the sound that lucky pennies do so much, there's no really any point on having 50% past 20 luck.
TreeFugger  [author] 16 Jan, 2019 @ 5:33pm
@AgentCucco I figured that that was a good place to balance it, since the luck based effect is to spawn luck ups, so it would be a little busted if you could guaruntee a lucky penny for every coin drop with luck, considering you're likely to hit 97 luck with this item. A 50% chance at a luck penny on top of the base chance is quite a lot when everything's considered.

Nice idea, but I find it a bit dumb that you can cap the item's luck at 47 while the majority of the luck-based items cap at 10 or 20 max (meaning any further luck upgrades will be meaningless).

very nice

@Salt-Gem That sounds like a good idea, I'll add it in the next update. I've been away from my computer, and I probably will be for a couple more days, but I should be updating this soon.

just a suggestion, what if ,when using any dice, there's a chance to drop any kind of coin?
normal>double penny>nickel/sticky nickel>lucky penny>dime
(sorry for eventual bad english)
