Description
Welcome to Manic's Scandinavian Units - A mod that aims to bring unique mid (950) and late (1200) game unit models to the Norse, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish cultures. Because it just seemed rather hypocritical of Denmark to be crusading in Estonia, using troops sporting Mjǫllnir pendants around their necks.

The early-game Norse DLC units have been left unchanged and the late-game models are mostly repurposed Holy Orders units (looking around they seemed to be a better match than the German unit models). Speaking of which, the archer model has been swapped with the light infantry model since the latter was more armoured and thus it made more sense that they'd see more front line combat. As such, late-game light infantry sport a bag of arrows on their back that I am unable to remove. Just pretend that they are a highly-skilled, multi-purpose light infantry unit!

This custom unit pack should be fully compatible with any and all mods for Crusader Kings II, so long as they don't also edit units tied to the 'norsegfx' culture (specifically the 'norse_avatars.gfx' file).

Want even more modded units? Or perhaps you're just the nosy type like me? Then I humbly suggest that you check out my other unit mods, located in the Manic's Units workshop collection.

For those experiencing issues with the Workshop, or otherwise wish to bypass it for whatever reason, you can download a file containing all of the Manic's Units mods and add-ons here[www.dropbox.com]. Simply place both the folder(s) and the .mod file(s) in your CK2 mod folder (Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II\mod by default).

All of these mods are both Ironman & savegame compatible.

Righty-ho, I have updated the mod. Varangian Guard unit models should now have weapons. Although, personally, I liked the idea of them killing entire armies with nothing but their firsts in a probably-drug-fuelled berserker rage.

Also, feeling that it's probably more historically accurate, Varangian Guard units will now use Norse round shields instead of those fantasy-looking gold-trimmed heater shields.

Yes, that's it. And thanks for the Hungarian models! I think they are the best ones so far!

@theirishturtle - Ah yes I forgot about that, sorry! Just to make sure, it's the models for the Varangian Guard mercenary band that you're talking about, right?

Did this update fix the Varangians from not having weapons? I'm 100% sure that it is this mod causing it.

Update: The Norse axe model has been swapped out for the one from vanilla. Surprisingly, it is of a much higher quality to the one in the DLC (which just looks very low-res in comparison). I've also slightly increased the size of the shields for heavy and light infantry to make them more accurate, from a functional perspective.

I always upvote this kind of mods. More variety is always good for this Grand Game :)

@Signus - Thanks! Yeah, the sort of 'end goal' I am currently set on is to make a single mod that will include all my custom unit packs. I am holding off for the moment as they are still very small in number. Similarly, I will continue to provide the option to download the individual mod packs separately as I respect that all of them probably won't be to everyone's tastes and people will want to cherry pick the ones they like.

As for the future, my next one will most likely be for the Celts but I don't have any particular set plan or schedule. These weren't planned modifications I made specifically for the workshop, they were just personal mods I made for the 1066 start that I later decided to share with anybody who might be interested in them. But, seeing how well they have been received, I do intend to keep making them at least semi-regularly. I have no idea how many cultures I will end up doing but it should hopefully be a fair few!

This is fantastic! Two questions though: When you have completed all the cultures you intend on doing, would it be possible for you too put all of your unit packs into a single modpack if it's not too much trouble? Also how many more cultures do you intend on doing, the models are great and it'd be amazing to have one for every culture in the future
