Typus Orbis Terrarum Reloaded

Description
FEB 2022: Updated mod for 1.32.

There are most likely still bugs and bad positions, and I am still working on a solution to some of the issues that have been reported. Thank you for continuing to submit bug reports!

DESCRIPTION: This is a third-party update for the map projection mod Typus Orbis Terrarum to 1.29 Manchu, as the original creator has been inactive since before the update. I updated the mod; however, I do not take credit for making it. All credit for this mod goes to bizarcasm.

MORE INFORMATION (via the original Workshop page):

"Typus Orbis Terrarum" roughly translates to "The Form of the World" in English. It was the name of the first map made by the Flemish cartographer, Abraham Ortelius, published in 1564. Ortelius was the creator of the first modern atlas, as well as the first person to propose the theory of continental drift. The original purpose of this mod was to create a new map that corrects the some of the more egregious geographical distortions in the "form of the world" of the vanilla, including, but not limited to: The relative position of the Americas, the size of Australia, and the severe distortions in Patagonia and Siberia. Unlike many map mods, it does not majorly change the province layout. The focus is on physical geography, not political geography. Game balance is unchanged, except to the degree that different province terrain will effect battles, and the positions of the continents will effect colonization.

In addition to being an improvement for the player, this map is also designed to be a resource for other modders, and a number of mods already use a version of this map as a base. Any modder has my permission to use it as part of another mod. I only ask that the base maps be properly attributed to me [bizarcasm, not aaatos]. I can offer more detailed documentation of specific changes, links to sources, and other support to anyone wishing to use this map, provided I have the time.

Features:

-A completely new map projection, the Braun Stereographic Projection, made from scratch. It is functionally and aesthetically very similar to the modified Miller Projection used in vanilla. However, it is 12.5% taller than the vanilla map, and somewhat more compressed towards the poles, allowing the continents to be placed properly in relation to each other. For everywhere south of northern Scandinavia, Siberia, and Canada, this amounts to a minimal change in province size. On average, provinces on the equator are about 5% taller than as vanilla, while those in Europe are about 5% shorter. The biggest changes in size are in Australia and Patagonia, which are nearly 20% larger than vanilla.

-A completely new heightmap, based on NASA satellite imagery. The height scale is slightly less dramatic than vanilla, but meant to keep the same spirit.

-Completely re-done coastlines. All coastlines have been redrawn by hand. Referenced from mostly from Google maps, but also from historical maps in cases where the coasts have dramatically changed.

-A completely new terrain and season colors map. The terrain map has been completely re-drawn from scratch, based largely on NASA data. Some terrains have been renamed to be more coherent and straight-forward. Additional terrains have been added in the form of Tundra and Impassable Mountains.

-Completely re-done rivers. Traced directly from maps converted to the new projection. The river density is roughly the same as vanilla, but properly placed, and appropriately detailed.

-An adjusted vanilla province map. The vanilla province map has been adapted to the new map, but it is relatively unchanged, except in circumstances where the original was extremely inaccurate. New sea zones were required, and have been adapted from pre-existing lakes and anachronistic reservoirs deemed not worthy of a unique province.

NOTE: Although a lot of testing has been done, there are probably still some bugs. Thing to look out for are: Missing positions. If an army, navy, city, or port is not inside it’s province (with a few exceptions for tiny islands), then this is a bug. There also may be errant province pixels, particularly in sea zones which I had to reshape. If you find any of these, or find any other glitches please post on the bugs discussion.

COMPATIBILITY: This mod should work with most mods that don’t modify the map files. Some province localization and history has also been changed, as some lakes/sea tiles have been shuffled around. The defines.lua has also been adjusted in order to make the camera in the menus work properly. Some vanilla features, namely achievements and the random new world, do not work with this mod.

NOTE TO BIZARCASM: If you are still updating the mod, please reach out to me if you would like this taken down or if you would like to use anything from it.

It's probably a dumb question but when a try to use the mod it just loads the vanilla game (I turned off all other mods)

I checked, including this there are 3 less outgoing trade flows in this mod's trade node file, so it's still missing two with this included. Here is the fix for Siam, just add it to the Burma node under it's outgoing to Ganges: outgoing={
name="gulf_of_siam"
path={
4395 585 586 590 2403 4835 4834 600 4831 1365
}
control={
4153.000000 1316.000000 4178.000000 1265.000000 4194.000000 1240.000000 4220.000000 1241.000000 4226.000000 1186.000000
}
}

Could you please update the trade nodes? They were changed somewhere in the past few patches and I noticed Burma trade doesn't go to Siam/Indochina in this mod, but it does in the base game.

Thank you.

@gabrieel100 I think ET already uses this map projection, so not with this mod directly but I'm pretty sure this mod is included in ET

@WhiverFichos It's cross-compatible! 1.33 doesn't add any new provinces, so the mod works as-is in 1.31-1.33. I'm planning to change the version marker in the next bug-fix update.

Could you update to 1.33 please? I love the mod so much.

Is it possible to make it compatible with ET?

I have implemented the original terrain map to your mod, if you would like to have it
