You might be wondering why this guide is of any importance. Aren't pumpkin bombs like, a useless map prop?

If you'd ask me, they're really useful. If you can trigger them at the right time they can net you an easy kill or can be used to pumpkin jump. More on that later, but first I will explain some stuff about pumpkin bombs if you don't know yet how they work.

Pumpkin bombs are a map prop that spawn on Eyeaduct, Mann Manor, Ghost Fort and Helltower. When you damage or hit a pumpkin bomb, whether its by melee, rocket, bullet or even jarate, mad milk and sandman balls it will detonate instantly which will deal plenty of damage in a decent radius. It will deal around 100-140 damage, depending on how close the victim is to the explosion. The explosion will only harm the person who detonates it and the enemy team, so it can't be used to grief teammates. Once a pumpkin bomb is destroyed it will re-spawn on the same spot after a while.

There are two ways you can use pumpkin bombs to your advantage:


By shooting at a pumkin bomb while an enemy is nearby, you can use it to kill or severely injure him. Hitscan weapons(shotgun, pistol, sniper rifle, smg) are the best at this but frankly any weapon but melee is good. Shooting a rocket, grenade or stickybomb at a pumpkin bomb creates a deadly combo of a double explosion, dealing massive damage. Make best use of pumpkin bombs by keeping an eye on them, lure enemies into them and stay away from them yourself.


As with all explosions, pumpkin bombs can be used to propel yourself at the cost of a lot of health. It is only advisable to do this if you've got enough hp or some kind of back-up. It is not advisable for lighter classes, as you will be left with really few hp. Only pyro, demoman, soldier and heavy should do this. It's best if you have some kind of backup, like a sandvich, overheal or you're jumping towards a health pack. Pumpkin jumping is not a very common occurence but can be used to get in and out of combat fast when necessary. The gunboats however, do reduce self harm from pumpkin bomb that you detonated so rocket jumping off pumpkin bombs while wearing gunboats doesn't cost that much hp but literally flings you to the end of the map.

Pumpkin bombs don't only exist as map props but can also be spawned manually. One of the regular spells that are available is MIRV pumpkins as it's referred to by the wiki. When cast, you will throw a bomb that will spawn multiple small pumpkin bombs once it hits a surface. When you detonate one of them they will all detonate, causing lots of damage in the radius. If you shoot at MIRV pumpkins placed by the enemy, they will merely be destroyed, or defused as I call them, because they dissapear without an explosion, so you can't use the enemy's pumpkin bombs to your advantage.

If you kill 5 players with pumpkin bombs detonated by you you will get the attack-o-lantern achievement. If you've played a while on event maps and pay attention to the pumpkin bombs on the map this achievement should be a breeze.
