But how to get those ungratful SoBs to actually be thankful and vote for me at the end of first term is so far beyond me....

Yup, sounds like Greece. Doesn't sound like a fun or plausible mod though.
And the only option i changed was "Compulsory Elections" to "On" - but i dont think it matters, because, as i said, 99% of the population is in my pocket. There is no-one to vote against me.
10/10 would fix world problems again.
