i once read a thing about it and it said something to do with replacing and renaming the materials but i'd imagine you put it into whatever the corrisponding folder would be or make a new folder and name it you can also open the vmt with vtfedit and you may need to change the folder path to the name of the folder you choose to create

they are litterally built from blocks and rectangles

with my prefabs they are vmf
you can open them in hammer
