The Slumbering

Description
Updates: !

The art assets are taking longer than I had hoped, but I pushed out a small update fixing the clarity of many aspects, and tweaking some smaller problems. I remain dedicated to this project, but will have to ask your patience on asset front. Thank you!

The Slumbering

This is the mod for The Slumbering, a brand new character class for Slay the Spire.

The mod adds a new character, over 85 new cards, including a full set of character specific cards, neutral cards, curse cards, monsters, 11 relics, events, potions, elites, powers, a new card type, custom vfx and sound effects, and much more!

WORK IN PROGRESS

Currently, this mod is nearly feature complete, however, I am currently working with a partner to deliver quality art for this mod, so most art in the mod currently is placeholder art. Additionally, values and mechanics are subject to change as further balancing changes occur, and as feedback comes in. This is the first public release of the mod, however I still consider this to be in the beta stages as I gather feedback from the community and make improvements in the future. Thank you for your understanding!

Mechanics and Theme

The Slumbering is a creature that has been asleep for so long, it no longer remembers who it is. It has grown frail in its slumber, but has learned how to harness the power of the dream world.

Mechanically, the Slumbering is designed to have a unique difficulty curve. The Slumbering starts with only 1 HP, and cannot gain more through any means. In order to deal with foes, the Slumbering must Block all incoming damage. Fortunately, the Slumbering comes equipped with two starting relics that allow traversal of the Spire with relative safety. The first relic is guided by how awakened the Slumbering is; the more it wakes up, the stronger it becomes. The second relic stores energy from the hearts of those who have passed on. As enemies are defeated, it will collect hearts which can be spent to gain Block for the turn. The amount of Block received is determined by the power level of the first relic. The design goal is for the balancing of slumber level and hearts to create a dynamic way to mitigate damage on the fly.

Additionally, the Slumbering is constantly drifting between the dream world and our reality. This means that during combat, the Slumbering will be afflicted by a Drowsy effect. While Drowsy, the Slumbering will be powered up by it's connection to the dream world, but will not have as much energy to muster for the fight. During combat, the Slumbering will have to plan its strategy according to how much power it wants to siphon from the dream world. But beware of cutting yourself off entirely from the dream world!
Does it try to deal very large amounts of damage from select powerful cards, or does it resist the call of power, and use its large energy pool to defend and stay reactive? The Slumbering has many tools that will benefit different playstyles within the unique set of mechanics that bind it.

Developer Notes

This is my first Slay the Spire mod, and I hope you all enjoy it! I had a blast making it in my free time over the past several months. Please let me know your thoughts, and share your experiences!

Just wanted to ask, what does the "The Seed" card do? i picked it up in a run, and even after playing the seed 5 times like it told me to, i fail to see what it "blossoming" even does

Hey, I've been playing this mod a bit recently and fortunately it seems like even without any updates since (at time of writing) May 2020, it's still compatible with the current modthespire build.

I've got a few comments on the balance, so I'll put them in the pinned discussion (plus I hit the character limit), but the long and short of it is that I found this mod to be pretty playable in combination with some other mods. I'm not sure if the mods I've played with (BetterRewards specifically) actually trivialize the difficulty curve or simply make it more enjoyable.
Without even having tried it yet, this is looking interesting as all hell and giving me ideas. Just to start with, "connection to the Dream World" suggests an ability to some of the Watcher's mysticism-oriented cards when strongly connected, particularly powers on the order of Like Water and perhaps even Deva Form, along with the Silent's Wraith Form. Maybe have a rare card, only playable at high Dream sync, that turns itself into your choice of Deva/Wraith/Demon.

Hi all, just wanted to give an update on this project's status. While I am still dedicated to creating it, getting art assets has taken longer than I had hoped, and due to Covid-19, might take a long while yet. I have pushed out a long overdue update addressing many of the clarity issues present for first time players, along with other small tweaks and bug fixes.
I aim to have a more substantive push for visual clarity in the coming months. Thank you all for your support and your patience!

Hi, thank you for your comments and feedback! Currently I am still in the process of working with someone to get the art done, but I am hopeful that it will start coming in soon! Additionally, I have been making adjustments to the availability of Block, along with other suggestions.

On the topic of clarity, currently everything works correctly as described by the text, however, I have received comments from a multiple sources that some people are having difficulty understanding certain mechanics, so I am working on creating ways to better convey these to everyone. Some of that I have been fixing already, and others I have good ideas that proper art will address when it is implemented.

I hope to have an update out soon that will address some of the larger gaps in clarity.

Thank you for your support, and I will continue to work on improving balance, clarity, and art assets in the coming time.

Honestly I've been enjoying this mod a lot! Can't wait for the cards to have actual art so I can tell them apart lol.

Additionally, a good bit of stuff could use some rewording so it's easier for new players to understand. Particularly, the fact that when you have no drowsy, you get half attack and block took a while to understand where the effect was coming from.
Additionally, the first relic says "fall deeper into slumber" but the second one says "gain block for how deep in slumber you are", but when you use the first one, the second one gives less block, not more like "how deep in slumber" would indicate.
All in all, this seems like it'll be a pretty great mod when it's done, and it's pretty good right now!

fun mod but i feel he does not get enough block or energy one or the other needs a buff

Sounds like a brilliant hardmode style character, but definitely not wise to run with some of the expansion mods. They add effects that do direct HP damage, bypassing block.
