The Black Death (The Blighted Bogs Update)

Description
A new, mysterious and terrifying disease has taken over the Constant! Do you have what it takes to survive in a withering world?

Creatures you encounter will have a chance of being infected with this disease which they can spread to others -- including yourself! Raw meat also has a chance of carrying the disease, so be extra careful to cook your food!

The disease causes the victim's maximum health and sanity to slowly deplete. If the DEADLY DISEASE config is enabled, the disease will continue to damage the victim until they die. It will cure itself after a time, but you'll have to make sure you keep your maximum health up with booster shots!*

*If the option is disabled, the disease will cure itself upon reaching its maximum penalty.

With the DISEASED PLANTS config enabled, a random selection of plants will also be diseased when a world is generated. But fear not! Diseased plants are perfectly safe and may just be a boon to your survival after all!

Immunity!

Immunity is your inherent protection from the plague!
You gain a large chunk upon being cured from the plague, but beware! Being in the thick of it will quickly drain your resistance and you'll be vulnerable once more! You can keep up your resistance via the following:

Eating mushrooms and fish to boost your immunity;
Keeping that Blightproof Beak on or staying close to a Blight Catcher to take the disease for you!

Decay!

Beware! Creatures slain by the plague will leave behind plagued globules which will quickly spread the disease across a vast distance! Burn them quick, or throw on an apron if you're brave enough to harvest them for extract.

A new threat approaches!

Whatever's behind this blight won't take kindly to those who defy it. Players who've resisted for too long will find themselves visited by the terrible blight bearers, Scratch and Squawk, come to destroy and steal... and cover everything you love in goop. Stay clear of their path and use their poor coordination to conquer them! But beware that Squawk will protect Scratch with his life, and Scratch will quickly flee should his protector fall before he does.

...With new rewards to claim!

For those with the salt to fend off the Harbingers of Blight a new toy waits to be created: The Critter Cannon! Capable of turning small creatures into powerful and messy bombs that can easily glue foes to the floor and deal hefty damage over time. Krampus won't be pleased by such displays of cruelty however.

Maybe you'd rather a trophy to show your bravery against this new threat with the Scratch 'n' Squawk Figure! Comes in 3 flavours: Marble, Stone, and Moonglass.

And a new arrival on cleanup duty!

A man of few words, Wade has come prepared to deal with the dangers of the constant - and keep it clean in the process!
Thanks to his suit, Wade can breathe in infected zones and clean the mess it leaves with (relative) ease or use the plague to his advantage.
...and beware! Wade's weak constitution leaves him vulnerable when the blighted beasts come biting!

His soap can prevent the plague from taking hold should an ally be exposed. Though it's up to you to detect if the time is right.

Use his broom to quickly clean messes, be they dirty friends or stains on the floor. Packs a punch, too.

His special spraygun can be loaded with several perfumes to grant areal boons/detriments:
The Sterile Solution will slowly generate immunity to any players/companions around the scented individual as well as decreasing the sanity loss from witnessing decay
The Iron Will Cologne will prevent death until it wears off... but make sure to heal before it does
The Pot Pie will lure pigmen, merms, and bunnymen to follow you
The Ravenous Rot Root will accelerate the plague in anything hit by it

Cure yourself with the power of bloodletting!

The plague keeping you down? Well grab some hounds teeth or bee stingers and slice away the sickness! Doing so will shorten the remaining duration of the plague by a small amount and reward you with a bottle of Plague Extract! Perfect for throwing at unfortunate creatures to infect them! Or to fuel the Blight Catcher.

Seek out The Good Doctor!

The lands are changing. Deep forests have died and left in their place a desolate bog. Rumours say some brave pigs have set up in these Blight Bogs believing the cure may lie within them! You may find it in your best interest to aid them in their search...

But how do you keep yourself safe from all this disease? There are so many ways!

Meditation and Medication!

If you're unlucky or just travelling with friends, it's a good idea to craft some Scented Sticks from the survival tab! While carrying them around, anything around you will be unaffected by the plague in the air! Results not guaranteed against physical sources.

Breath easy in your travels!

Scared to travel into plague-ridden territory? Never fear! Just don this spooky mask found in the Dress tab, and you'll be free to dance among the lesser beings. Shame on them for not thinking of the same thing!

Be aware of your surroundings!

With this handy Pathogenometer you can read how much plague is in the air! If it starts buzzing you know to put on a mask or get some sticks ready!

Time to get dirty!

Need to harvest globules? Throw around bottles of plague without fear? Perhaps you're in the midst of an outbreak in a killer bee field! Whatever your need this apron is guaranteed to protect you from all physical sources of the pestilence!

Also provides 60% reduction from incoming damage thanks to its durable tentacle-leather blend.

Keep your camp fresh!

Fueled by Rot and Plague Extract, this fancy decor will keep that stinky, diseased air away from your base and out of your lungs!

Disclaimer: The Blight Catcher does not cure existing illness. It also does not prevent infection from physical sources of the plague

Leave it to nature!

It seems some of the local flora has gained an appetite for the blight. Perhaps it would be willing to give you a wash should you get some gunk on you in your travels?
Rumours have it there's a way to turn Totally Normal Trees in the forests into totally healthy ones...

More to Come!
There's still a great many features underway to look forward to! And look: There's even a roadmap for me to update as the features come out!

do plants spread disease to neighboring plants?

I agree that birds REALLY shouldn't be able to spawn sickly. There's no room to wear pretty much any other head equipment but the beak, because a plague-ridden crow can spawn right by you at any moment.
