Paintable Blocks [0.7.1]

Description
Have you ever found Medieval Engineers' colors to be a bit boring and dull?
Did you get bored with designing stuff out of stones and wood?
Did you envy fellow space engineers for having so many colors to play with?

Now you don't have to anymore, as we have the pleasure to present you the

Paintable Blocks Mod

Features
This mod adds tools that allow you to paint almost every block in the game to any color you want. The process of doing so consists of two parts: adding a base coat to a block and coloring it. Currently there are 7 tools available for base coats:
  • Plaster Tool - for coloring whole stone blocks
  • Fine Plaster Tool - for coloring parts of stone blocks (edges, arches, etc.)
  • Daub Tool - for coloring daub and wood walls
  • Metal Paint Tool - for coloring metals and few small grid wood blocks
  • Wood Paint Tool - for coloring almost all wooden blocks
  • Brazing Tool - for turning metal parts into brass
  • Russia Iron Tool - for turning metal parts into russia iron
After that, the blocks can be recolored using 16 currently available basic color tools, though it is also possible to create new ones and redefine colors in existing blueprints with basic xml skills (more on that later).

There is a wide support for already existing mods, in particular:
  • Gothic Architecture & More
  • Additional Arches
  • Arched Timbers and Diagonal Planks
  • Ship Crafting
  • Brick Blocks
  • All mods from the Train Parts Modpack
  • Steam Engines
  • Iron Bars, Grates & Fences
And many others, including by default all mods that use vanilla material names.

Please note that due to many textures included, this mod is quite large in size and downloading it might take a while.

Furthermore, as of 2020-10-15, the mod is fully survival compatible.

Planned Features and Known Bugs
This is the first release of the mod and there are some things not implemented or fully working yet. In the near future we plan on:
  • [s]adding Survival compatibility - for now the mod is Creative only.[/s]
  • replacing individual coloring tools with a single one that would allow for choosing the color dynamically
  • adding the possibility of coloring block attachments - doors, bogie wheels, etc.
  • widening the list of colorable blocks if there is such need
If you happen to stumble upon some issues, please report them to us, either through this mod's comments or on our Discord server, which you are welcome to join:

Credits
It would not be possible to create this mod without the cooperation with skillful modders I had the honor to work with on this project. I wanted to thank them for their time and effort:
Equinox - creating the whole backbone of this mod which made it possible in the first place, scripting, a lot of bugfixing
Johnbeere - data editing, material, tool and color implementation and a lot of testing
Wolfgar7474 - making models and icons for all the tools
Onca77 - doing all the data work for survival compatibility

I'd also want to thank Shad for making our lifes a lot easier when implementing the materials for the Gothic Mod.

Additional Info
Before the universal coloring tool gets implemented, there are two ways of getting custom colors implemented if you want to get involved into a bit of coding.

The color data is stored both in newer tools and in blueprints in the HSV format, one 3-digit group for each value (0-359;-100-+100;-100-+100). This value can be changed both in the blueprint files and also in existing tools or added to new tools (see Adding New Tools). Slight adjustment might be necessary due to the way colors are rendered in game.

Adding New Tools

To add a new color tool, duplicate one of the existing ones and open the file. You need to change all the PaintTool[color] subtypes in the file to new ones, not yet used. Make sure they are all the same. After that just replace the color code and change it's in game name to avoid confusion (note though that it will still appear with the icon of the initial one, so unless you want to create your own icons, just be aware of that).

That's it. Remember that in case something goes wrong you can always redownload the whole mod by unsubscribing and resubscribing to it on the workshop.

Have fun!

I think there's probably multiple bugs going on. Is it just specific blocks with texture issues? It could be the fault of the blocks, and not the paint mod.

@Johnbeere I ran some tests in a world with only this mod (both with and without its dependencies) loaded. In both cases I still encountered texture glitches on some blocks, so I don't think the issue is exclusively caused by using other mods.

That's a glitch with the game caused by using mods that load too many textures into the game. Wolf's mods are especially bad about using tons of textures.

Love this mod, but i've found lately that I get strange texture glitches with plastered doors and windows.

@Xaerthus First off, thank you for all your amazing work for ME!

I was wondering if you could make a set of paintable domes like storied past's. Also, it would be great if we had some glass domes (maybe even stained glass?).

Just some ideas. Thanks for your time.

As a result of experiences of many people as well as to encourage being able to use paints in survival, the complicated and expensive crafting recipes have been discarded.
Paints are now free and can be all crafter in the inventory using the basic tools as prerequisites.

So what changed or was fixed in last update just wondering ??
Dragon Fire 813 2 Jul, 2023 @ 6:05pm
That was enough of a clue to for me to figure it out. You convert the margin trowel. Thanks
Johnbeere  [author] 2 Jul, 2023 @ 5:39pm
The scraping tool is converted from one of the other items in your personal crafting inventory - I don't remember exactly what item it's converted from though
Dragon Fire 813 2 Jul, 2023 @ 5:26pm
I can't for the life of me figure out what I need or where to craft the scraping tool. I have all crafting stations built and several items I think I would need to make it.
