OVERHAUL IN PROGRESS
If you want more features and bugfixes, the Pre-Release build is actively in development. If you're experiencing bugs, first check this build out to see if they are already fixed before reporting them.

Campaign spawning was made possible by CreaosisSquared. Be sure to check out their mods!

There is a Discord server[discord.gg] for this mod. I sometimes host events in various games including Barotrauma. I also talk and post about future features and other work-in-progress projects of mine! Check it out!

!!! Many aspects of this mod are unfinished, and some features may be absent. Patches to fix any bugs will be released when we have time, but we are working on a total overhaul. !!!

Run-Down
Withering Souls is a challenging mod for Barotrauma inspired by games such as Left 4 Dead, Project Zomboid, and GTFO, with an emphasis on co-operative horror gameplay. Ghouls will be encountered at various stages in the game, staggering towards you with open jaws. The concept of infectious enemies is at the core of this mod, which is constantly rebalanced and adjusted with the goal of an unforgiving experience.

What's in it?
Withering Souls contains a selection of interesting features, each designed to bring a new terror to your crew:
  • The living dead can infest your submarine or outpost, shambling and staggering around to find and consume any sign of human life, afflicted by a plague called Hadal Rot.
  • Infection incubation time varies, but a bite is certain death.
  • Ghouls can mutate, be it at random or upon certain conditions being met. Play around with the various chemicals in the base-game before turning, and you'll think of the husk infection as a case of the sniffles.
  • A rare treatment method for infection that requires you undergo a severe risk.

How do I cure it?
Hadal Rot has no commercially available cure. Doctors will have to get a bit risky to treat it:
  • Step 0: Diagnosis. It is important to first ensure the patient is infected. You can tell if someone is infected by a dark-ish smoke pouring out from their face.
  • Step 1: Poisoning. Neurotoxic poisoning has shown to prevent zombie reanimation in all recorded cases.
  • Step 2: Smiting. Deusizine can completely destroy Hadal Rot after neurotoxin binds to it.

What kind of enemies does it add?
You'll have to experiment and find out :)
If you go digging around in the files or find out about a certain zombie type, I only ask that you try and keep details as vague as possible.

Closing Statements
Withering Souls has been through a years-long development process. Finding its roots as a simple 'Zombies' mod about the Rage virus from 28 Days Later, the mod eventually grew to be known throughout multiple communities under the name Functional Necrosis. Without feedback from the community, it couldn't have gotten as big as it is today. I hope you've all enjoyed it, even through all the admittedly questionable design choices in the past.
Here's to another 3 years!

Please ask me before you use any assets from this mod in your own.

Please, is there a way to play the old Functional Necrosis? I loved that mod.

Just letting anyone coming by who isint in the withering souls discord know: The mod's on hiatus at the moment thanks to the developers computer going kaput, so don't expect any updates for a while.

i use it with that mod sometimes, but it's.. rather brutal. ghouls often rip off limbs (not intended) when fighting you and it becomes a lot harder to prevent infection unless you have sutures on hand. also, the other infected, such as humanpsionic or humaninfected, do not have innate support for neurotrauma and are thus much harder to kill than intended.

Does this function with NT (Neurotrauma Fork)

that may just be a problem with this version. the pre-release isn't quite at the place where i feel like pushing those changes to this build, but if you go on my workshop page you can find it. it has way more content and bugfixes across the board

im thinking of running this mod for a campaign with a group, is it in a good enough condition for that yet?
washedAwry  [author] 20 Aug, 2024 @ 10:09am
yes, as well as outpost events and missions
