CSV 1337 Rusty Bucket

Description
Civillian Shipping Vessel registration 1337 Rusty Bucket. "She may be ugly. She may be slow. But at least she flies."

A family-owned freighter, the Rusty Bucket (pronounced Roostey Bouquet, at the insistance of her owner) has been in operation for well over a hundred years. Originally a Hynerian short range shuttle, she's been retrofitted and upgraded so many times over the years that her hull is unrecognisable and unique. Most notably her engines have been upgraded, with a full FTL drive-sled being fitted to the underside/rear of the ship. Being originally of Hynerian design meant that the ship and her upgrades were relatively cheap. However as the average hight for Hynerians is about three feet, it also means a lot of bumped heads on the low ceilings.

Currently configured for long range passenger and cargo transport. The Rusty Bucket sports a jerry-rigged cargo grappler and cold storage external cargo bays, an ample hold, and one of the most uncomfortable passenger cabins in the quadrant. It's also been suggested that she may hide some hidden smuggler holes for transporting less than legal cargo.

As a civilian ship she is, by law, unarmed. And though her armour is fairly robust the after-market shield generators are on the weak side.

This is the second ship I've built so far in Starship Evo. My first being a small one man fighter. I mostly used this as a way of exploring and learning some of the more complex logic and mechanic systems of the game. Beginning with the cockpit and working backwards from there. So the quality will vary wildly throughout the ship. I've tried to go back and re-work some of the earlier stuff, but I'd rather start a new ship than completely re-design this one.

Hopefully every button, switch, and slider should function. So have fun fiddling with them all.

I also made the unfortunate mistake of starting to detail the outside of the ship with some cool-looking but fairly time consuming designs. Which I honestly just abandoned out of boredom... Re-doing the same pattern over and over really sucks the fun out of building! But it's meant to be an ugly ship, so I'm just gonna leave it as is.

I've not hooked the landing gear and other components upto any hotkeys by choice. I like the idea of having to push buttons and have a multi-crew setup to fly it. But it does make landing and takeoff a bit awkward solo. I recommend spawning it in space and then extending the landing gear before entering gravity if you want to land. Or get a friend to do it!

The only technical issues I've noticed are a few instances of the game not handling the amount of stickers well (especially at distance), and a few clipping issues around the original cockpit blast shields. There also seems to be an issue with the loading ramp clipping with the ground when It doesn't seem like it should.

All in all this took me far too long to finish up, but I learned a lot in the process and I think there's some fun little details here and there. Hope you enjoy it!

---Update---

Fixed an issue with the gravity generators overlapping causing increased gravity in some parts of the ship. Thanks go to Kwyzar for pointing it out!

By all means, please do. I did consider having some hidden weapons on it. I did some prototypes of a hidden turret where the cargo grappler ended up, but ended up deciding to keep it entirely civilian.

Can't wait to see what you come up with though.

It would be cool if there was a illegal weapon mod for the ship, I noticed that you put in a lot of room for expansion in the logic drawers and little empty areas, I might build a turret to attatch to the ship

Thanks dude, glad you enjoyed it!

I've not seen that one happen myself but thanks for the heads up. I might wait until the collision improvements are patched in before I go back to it though. I can see that causing a lot of problems in the future.

This is a really good ship, the one issue is sometimes when the landing gear or bay door is opened some of the logic doesn't sync up properly and components end up lagging behind and not working properly, but I would probably mostly put the blame on the current jankiness of the game in general, since as long as you cycle it a few times it starts working again

Ahh, I hadn't noticed that. This was my first time using the gravity blocks. I didn't realise they were cumulitive so I just threw them everywhere to get coverage. I'll have a fiddle with it and fix the issue. Thanks for the kind comment and letting me know! :KneelingBow:

this ship is very beautifully crafted. Excellent work on all the mechanics and logic and craftsmanship. Although i will say when i was exploring this beauty i kept falling through the ship, and I figured out why this was happening. I checked the gravity fields on the ship and noticed some were overlapping. So instead of it being x1 in gravity strength it would be x5 because the fields overlapped. I found 2 ways of going about fixing it. The easiest way is to turn all the gravity fields down to 0 and then just pick one and adjust the boundaries to fit the whole ship, or to carefully adjust the boundaries of each gravity field so that there aren't any overlaps. Other than that gravity field issue causing me to fall through the ship everything worked amazingly and was very well designed.

Thanks dude! Yeah, the decals took a looong time. Honestly I'm not sure I'd try something like that again. It got very tedious towards the end. Does look cool though, if I do say so myself.

You sir have far more patience than I do for placing 1000's of decals. Well done! The Window covers are a really neat idea as well. Awesome use of detail and props on the interior too!
