Description
New culture-focused building choices for the Theater Square, which is renamed to "Civic Square". Adds a total of 6 new buildings and reworks the existing buildings as well, now stretching over 4 (!) tiers instead of 3, not counting Museums which are now separate from the tier progression.

The new bonuses provide each city with a multitude of ways to earn Culture and even some Tourism, Loyalty, and Amenities. This mod is designed to make especially large cities more powerful for culture, intended to allow a culture game to be played with tall cities. The necessity to gain new cities just for more Great Works slots is reduced.

Create cultural venues so glorious that people shall sing and dance all day long.

Credit to JFD for code relating to the name change of the district.

Features
  • Renames Theater Square to Civic Square to avoid a double appearance of "Theater" as well as to represent the more complex role it now has.
  • Reworked the 4 existing buildings in Civic Square (see below for details). Amphitheater renamed to just "Theater", Broadcast Center renamed to "Broadcast Tower".
  • 6 new buildings added: Assembly, Cabinet (of Curiosities), Mansion, Opera House, Grand Hotel, and Media Center (see below for details).
  • Unique 3d art and icons for all these buildings.
  • Museums are no longer part of the regular building progression. Requiring only a tier 2 building and their individual prerequisite Civic, they are mainly just a way to get more slots which can be themed, whereas the regular buildings cannot be themed. No longer unlock Archaeology Museums before knowing what Archaeology is.
  • New buildings make Great Musicians available earlier and fit the classical works of music better thematically.
  • Adjusted some Inspirations to include the new buildings.
  • New and reworked policies (see below for details).

Details
  • 1 - Theater: 1 more Great Work of Writing slot than the Assembly. Unlocks at Drama and Poetry.
  • 1 - Assembly: +0.2 Culture per Citizen. Unlocks at Political Philosophy.
  • 2 - Cabinet: One more Specialist slot than usual, and +1 Culture to Specialists. Its two Great Work slots can hold any Great Work type. Unlocks at Humanism.
  • 2 - Mansion: +1 Culture per Governor Promotion in this city. Can only hold Great Works of Art. Unlocks at Diplomatic Service.
  • 3 - Opera: +1 Culture from each Great Work in this city. Unlocks at Opera and Ballet.
  • 3 - Grand Hotel: +1 Culture adjacency in district with Charming Appeal, another +1 with Breathtaking Appeal. Tourism equal to the adjacency bonus of this district. Unlocks at Opera and Ballet.
  • 4 - Broadcast Tower: +3 Culture to all cities within 6 tiles, doubled if powered. Unlocks at Radio.
  • 4 -Media Center: +5% Culture in this city, doubled if powered. Unlocks at Mass Media.
  • Museum of Art: mostly unchanged. Unlocks at Nationalism.
  • Museum of Archaeology: now also provides +3 Culture to tiles with Antiquity Sites and Shipwrecks. Unlocks at Natural History.

The Marae is unchanged and will replace both tier 1 buildings.
The Film Studio replaces both tier 4 buildings and the percentage bonus of the Media Center. It also provides regional culture yield, but its quantity depends on the diversity of terrain in the city.
Cosmetic-only: Civs with the Mediterranean building art style will still use the old Amphitheaters similar to Greece (but without the Acropolis district's Parthenon of course).

The following buildings also grant +1 Amenity: Theater, Cabinet, Opera, Media Center, Film Studio
The following buildings also grant Loyalty Bonuses: Assembly, Mansion, Grand Hotel, Broadcast Tower

Policies
  • Grand Opera renamed to "Grand Ball of Arts" and it no longer buffs building yields by +50%/+100%, but by +1/+2 Culture respectively. This change was necessary for mechanical reasons.
  • Memes (Social Media): updates Grand Opera, Culture granted based on building tier.

Compatibility and Recommendations

Requires Gathering Storm and Rise & Fall to download (because art assets from both are used), but Rise & Fall is not required to be active to play with the mod. Other DLC supported but not required.

This mod is compatible with JFD's Rule with Faith, P0kiehl's Civilizations Expanded, and CIVITAS' City States Expanded (CSE). The new buildings will receive the respective bonuses.

Compatible with all my other mods (including the Dojo).

If you want tier 4 buildings to receive bonuses from city states, you need CSE and activate the Ethiopia-style city state bonuses of that mod (via game mode option).

Compatible with any Specialists mod.

This mod is of course not compatible with other mods fundamentally changing the Theater Square.

I highly recommend using this mod together with the other mods from my Urban Complexity series, especially the District Expansions.

Oh wait. I thought railway hotel is vanilla but that's from the Second Unique Infrastructure mod. So it is a mod incompatibility. I assume that would be something the other mod author would probably need to fix? I'll ask a question there.

Seems like Canada's railway hotel can't be built if you don't build the assembly. And it blocks everything else. So if you build the theater, you're just stuck and can't build anything else. Is this a known issue or could this be a bad mod interaction?

Thanks for the quick response, the wording on some of them was confusing so i just wanted to make sure

all need Gathering Storm, I don't mark them so as a joke...

Hey, I just wanted to ask if any of your districts reworked mods works in vanilla civ 6, or do they all need gathering storm to work?

Excellent - thanks

Same as my response for the Entertainment Expansion

It looks pretty awesome and I'm keen to have some differences between cities based on district specialisation, but will it work with Sukritact's Urban Identities? The district has been renamed and are referenced in some of the regions

I just saw the "Villa" building in Civ VII give Influence. Could that be a way forward for the loyalty buildings to make them more on par with Amenities? Granting Influence if the city is at full loyalty? Maybe limiting it to the city having a governor or so.

Thank you for the tip. I'll check into it.
