I suggest having a look-see at the ships that come pre-packaged with the mod! Every odd shape packed with Ablate is derived from a normal SQUARE with corners cut off.
All of the "GREEBLE"-shaped blocks have at least one face that is identical to the length of the hypotenuse of a RIGHT_TRI one scale below. So, you can fit every piece together if you space things correctly.
Again, the ships I made for the mod all make liberal use of the unique shapes in the Ablate shapepalette. In the campaign, you can check out the blueprints using COMMAND mode and editing the blueprint of the selected, recruited ship by pressing 3, if memory serves.
