Less-Lethal Defence System - [out of date, new version linked inside]

Description
UP TO DATE VERSION: I am no longer able to keep my mods updated on Rimworld due to shifting real world priorities. This mod has been graciously adopted, and the new link can be found here: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2780596316

Overview
"The Pershing Security Services Less-Lethal Defence System is the premier personal defence package for law enforcement and security agencies in the sub-sector. This integrated system has given safety specialists a more humane means of protecting lives for over a century. The Silver Package in the line-up consists of the SL-2 shoulder-mounted launcher with sting ammunition, 3-B Electro-stun Baton, and the Enforcer flexible baton ammunition. Well-optimised for multiple engagement brackets and less-lethal takedowns of human targets, we're certain that your organisation will find the right tool for defending others.

Note: The Pershing Security Services Enforcer flexible baton ammunition is only classed as less-lethal when used standalone with appropriately marked and modified firearms. Deployment of Enforcer flexible baton ammunition alongside, or within a conventional firearm constitutes unintended use and excludes the operator from after-sales support. Pershing Security Services does not accept liability for any use of its products in contravention to our Terms of Use, manufacturing guidelines, regional arms treaties, and any other legislature applicable to the operator."

Adds a set of industrial-tech weapons designed to incapacitate, rather than kill biological targets. Requires the Less-Lethal Arms research and a machining table to produce.

Includes the following:

Enforcer shotgun - A semi-automatic shotgun with two firing modes and high stopping power. The lethal firing mode delivers high damage slugs to medium range. The less-lethal mode fires a flexible baton or 'bean-bag' round that inflicts blunt trauma and bruising. Its effectiveness is offset by poor armour penetration.
Stun baton - A melee weapon that inflicts reduced damage compared to its contemporaries but shocks its target, causing severe pain and blunt-force trauma.
Shoulder sting launcher - 4-round grenade launcher in the utility slot configured to fire less-lethal sting grenades. Sting grenades cause painful bruising to lightly armoured targets in their area of effect. Requires steel to reload.

The enforcer shotgun is a versatile mid-to-late Industrial weapon intended to fill the need for a hard-hitting semi-automatic weapon. It has a consistent and high damage output, and features the ability to instantly switch between lethal and less-lethal munitions. The weapon is balanced by unimpressive range and almost non-existent armour penetration. When wielded, a button showing possible ammunition types will appear in the bottom toolbar. Clicking on your ammunition type of choice and ordering a manual attack will result in a switch to that ammunition and attacking with it.

This shotgun's high stopping power and damage output makes it a surprisingly effective general purpose weapon, and its ferocious slugs will happily remove human limbs on the second hit. The bean-bag ammunition inflicts blunt damage and applies an additional bruise effect, hindering the enemy's ability to fight without massive pain.

The stun baton is a blunt melee weapon ideal for taking and guarding prisoners. It falls behind in raw damage output compared to other melee weapons, but strikes with its head inflict a stacking electroshock effect that reduces the target's movement and manipulation. The tonfa-style side handle also assists in catching and deflecting blows, represented by the increased melee dodge chance while wielding this weapon. The stun baton is an effective personal defence and less-lethal weapon for prison guards and manhunters.

The shoulder-mounted sting launcher is equipped in the utility (belt) slot, allowing unimpeded use of other weapons. It launches sting grenades filled with rubber balls that inflict especially painful bruising, with a high chance of striking multiple body parts at once. Enemies hit by this weapon will be peppered with bruises, making it an excellent crowd control support weapon.

It is balanced by a slight movement speed reduction when worn (-0.4 sq/s) and has a capacity of four rounds, reloaded with steel. Its damage output against single targets is unimpressive and it has no armour penetration to speak of, but its effectiveness grows rapidly against larger groups of poorly-armoured enemies.

Yet I hear you say, "Bullet Magnet, if it can fire non-lethal grenades, what about other types of ordnance?" And well, all I can say is watch this user's workshop.

Requirements and Dependencies
Requires the Royalty DLC and Harmony.

Special thanks to Tittymcswaggy for assistance in implementing select-fire.

Notes
1. The weapons in this pack are designed to incapacitate or 'down' targets, but they are still affected by the 'Enemy death on downed' AI storyteller setting accessed through Custom storyteller settings. This setting imposes a chance of any target you down instantly dying. This is not a bug, but a feature of Rimworld. If you want to down enemies more effectively, reduce the effect of this setting.

2. At time of release, users who equip the enforcer shotgun with DevMode enabled may receive an error related to MVCF. This is related to the Multi-Verb Combat Framework that is not used in this mod, but may be in use with your other mods. The error is harmless and you should be able to ignore it without issue.

Special thanks to Zaljerem there. Will update this mod's description to match.

Hi ... I'd be happy to adopt this mod, with all due credit to you. In fact, I've already pulled it down and done some work on it, converting it to use Vanilla Expanded Framework (for multiple verbs and for adding verbs to apparel for the sting launcher - no errors and it seems to be pretty stable). Anyway, pretty neat mod, and I'd be happy to add it to my stable of continued mods. Thanks.

It's updated to 1.3, but I'm having an issue where the game throws up a red error claiming it's not loading something for the shoulder-mounted launcher. The launcher... seems to work fine. I'm looking into it.

Comment with any other issues or ideas.

The androids in my colony are unable to refill the shoulder launcher they instead just stand there next to steel for hours and as I don't have any human colonists I don't know if they have the same issue.

so i'm bug hunting, and one of my searches turned up all your base [github.com], and an explanation that overwriting vanilla stuff was bad for compatibility.

[Less-Lethal Defence System] causes compatibility errors by overwriting Bomb in file E:\steam\steamapps\workshop\content\294100\2383958584\1.0\Defs\ThingDefs_Misc\UtilityIndustrial.xml

is there a way you can accomplish the mod's goals without doing that?

@Bullet Magnet No worries. The only thing I can think of is that I believe the railgun sabots from RimAtomics do most of their damage in the explosion that happens after the projectile hits the ground. No idea if any of the code in this mod to make the sting projectile be less lethal might somehow conflict or overlap. Beyond that, I have no idea -- didn't seem like these two mods should bother each other.

@Kelarius

I have absolutely no clue as to how that interaction could occur, because this is a very standalone mod built off existing Rimworld XML and a piece of code used by popular mods such as TMC Armoury.

I unfortunately don't know where to even begin assisting you.

I recently noticed what appears to be a conflict between this mod and RimAtomics. In my games I typically go to space with SOS2, then build the rail guns (punishers) from RimAtomics to shell enemy bases planet side.

With this mod installed, I'm noticing that the railgun shots do a lot less damage than they should - both when launched to other map tiles and if used to attack things on the current map. Instead of doing a few hundred damage, the shots when they land won't even break wooden walls.

I am not sure if it's an interaction among multiple mods perhaps as I have a large load order, but removing this mod immediately fixed the issue.
