After Death

Description
Who to Continue Playing As
Tired of playing favorites with your primary heir? Want to make Gavelkind great again? This mod adds challenge and roleplay potential with new succession game rules that allow you to play as a relevant randomized successor, keeping a playthrough interesting and challenging throughout.

I always find Crusader Kings to be the most enjoyable in the early stages, when I am a lowly Count scheming to gain power. There is not terribly much left to do once I am the all powerful King-Emperor-God of the realm. When you know you will continue as your primary heir, it is easy to manipulate your children so you never lose titles or land, only occasionally fend off a troublesome sibling who is foolish enough to challenge you. Not knowing which of your offspring you will continue playing as, you have to attempt to set up all your heirs for success, constantly seeking more titles so that you have enough to go around. Your incentives as a player match the incentives you would have as a parent, wanting all your children to do well. But there is only so much room at the top, so you can rise from Count to King and back again in a few generations.

Game Rules
Random Child (New Default) You become random landed child of your previous character. May be a grandchild if they are landed or a direct heir. You will learn to appreciate confederate partition in a ways you never thought possible.

Random Dynasty Member You become a random landed character of your Dynasty.
Glory to the Karlings.

Random Vassal You become a random vassal of your previous character. Vassals under 35 will be preferred. Chaos is a ladder.

Random Neighbor You will become a landed character near-ish by, Characters under 35 will be preferred. Play as your former rivals or allies, fight back and forth over the same land for generations.

Random Character You will become a random landed character under 35 within one rank of your previous character. (A King will come back as low as a Duke or as high as an Emperor). Reincarnation Quantum Leap style

Youngest Character You will become the youngest landed character in the world. Baby Count doo do doo dodoo.

Strongest Heir The Heir with the highest skill total (excluding prowess) to one of your titles. Only the strong will survive.

Default Your primary heir, like vanilla. Not Everyone likes fun.

Compatibility
Modifies window_succession_event.gui. Should generally be compatible with everything else. Some bits of localization are changed to make sure this window makes sense. The titles lost section is disabled because it gets very confused with random characters on succession. If for whatever reason one of the options fails to find a valid character, it will default back to the standard vanilla player heir. If testing, the kill character console command will bypass the events that make this mod work. Use Bestow Bubonic Plague and wait for nature to take its course naturally instead. Installing mid save should switch you to the new default (Random Child) but you cannot change game rules mid save so you are stuck with that. Multiplayer should work in theory. Achievements not possible.

Inherichance by Stik that has similar, but slightly different rules, also some options for gold splitting too which is nice. Either mod works well (only one is needed). Stik tends to update things in a more timely manner than I do so go check it out too.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working for me with the latest game version.
I tried playing a Viking leader, and I always ended up as the elected leader of my kingdom when I had it set to random dynasty member..

If you have any plans on updating it, both this and Inherichance are in stasis and this is by far the best way to play IMO :D

Does this work with the current version? It comes with a warning in the launcher, and either I've been rather lucky with the random inheritance or it isn't functioning for me in game.

nothing happens until your character dies. Then it should be randomized, and could still be your normal heir.

The game rule is there, but it doesn't seem to do anything. I have no other mods.

Request: The one that inherits the top tier title is your new character, regardles of Dynasty.
This way I can continue as for example the Roman Emperor after I lost a civil war with my previous dynasty, lose all my work in making a strong bloodline and start over again weak and in danger.. Now I can truly let the civil wars of Rome play out
