Tainted Blood

Description
In essence this mod introduces a new race, namely the umbra. Some say blasphemers become touched by Narko, others say it's a rare affliction or disease... whatever the truth, they're here now...

TL;DR

This is a mod that basically introduces vampirism, mixed with a little kenshi lore. Specifically it is my vision of this idea. The mod comes in modular form as there are in fact multiple "add-ons" (allready on the workshop/soon to come/or canceled on my own whims.)

KEEP READING!!! I know it hurts in the head, but I believe in you!!!!

It is also a death-item mod. This mod will not make Umbra eat corpses, because it's buggy as hell and if I included that feature, you wouldn't want it... So basically every humanoid has Blood in their inventory, which is a very bulky food item restricted to umbras... Once looted, the NPC dies (characters in player faction are fine when looted) and the umbra can have a cocktail.

So far there is :
-Tainted Blood ( the Main mod)
-Tainted Blood - Military Craft Compatibility patch ( to apply fighting animations to Greenlander Umbra ,scorchlander Umbra and shekk Umbra)
-Tainted Blood - The Forsaken (A WIP mod that adds several recruitable Umbra NPC's to the world with custom dialogue, aswell as give a big facelift to Flotsam Village, see mod page for info
-Tainted Blood - The Forsaken (Genesis Ed.) (A version of The forsaken mod with no edits to the world or any NPC's aside from the new custom NPC's. Will need the Genesis patch to work with Genesis.)
-Tainted Blood - Genesis Patch (Patches Tainted Blood for Genesis, Only to be used with "Base Tainted Blood mod" and "Tainted Blood - the forsaken (Genesis Ed.). DO NOT use with "Military craft patch" or "Standard Forsaken Mod".")

May be uploaded later on or not at all, depending on feedback:
-Tainted Blood - The Reaping (Some rather unsavory means of dealing with your foes and keep your Umbra Disciples sated... amongst other things)
-Tainted Blood - The Old ways (An experimental mod, introducing ways to do rituals/sacrifices in exchange for power... this might sound very cool, and it is, but remember this is kenshi and I'm just an amateur modder... just putting that out there)

REQUIRMENTS!!!!!
1) You NEED "Faces+" for umbra faces and red eyes, and "Faces+Addon2" for Umbra Shek faces + red eyes.
Be aware I modified my mod so that only umbras can access red eyes, and greenlander humans only have access to non-glowing eyes, whereas Faces+ originally adds scorchlander eyes to humans.
2) You SHOULD download my other mod "Layken's Slave-murder Fix" in order to prevent every captured Npc being killed on the spot when being enslaved. (Slaver will loot captured slaves, thus looting their death-item, which results in every enslaved humanoid being killed instantly, the aforementioned mod prevents that from happening).

I am by no means a graphical artist, and the beautiful textures/meshes of Faces+ are not of my own doing... this mod would look alot more bland without those killer textures.

If you've read thus far, I urge you to carry on a little bit further...
The "Tainted Blood" mod series are a personal project which were never intended to get uploaded... They started out as QoL tweaks for my own personal playthroughs. They became vastly more complex, but ultimately tailored very specifically to my own needs, often being dependant on a miriad of other mods I used in my load order. Recently I took it upon myself to try and make these as "streamlined" as possible and roll them out to the public. It takes quite a bit of rewriting, and effort, to untangle them and make them into a standalone mod for others to (possibly) enjoy.

I look forward to feedback, but I will not make any promises to anyone. If ever, anyone wants something modified in my mod... make a patch. I might do it myself, but only if it suits my needs. Anyone is allowed to release patches, and even use my assets, so long as credit is given where credit is due.

F.A.Q.

Q: Is there a new faction? Friendly or hostile?
A: No, the only Umbra you will currently encounter in Kenshi, are those you make at the start of a new game, by using 1 of 3 custom starts I included with the mod. Aside from those rather limited options, the "Tainted Blood - The Forsaken" adds several recruitable characters with custom dialogue.

Q: Can I make/turn more people in Umbras?
A: No, the only way to change a character's race is through heavy Save-file editing which'll turn you insane before you even get to the animation-editing of said character. This is a fundamental limitation of the game engine.

Q: I'd like to have way more umbras in my faction than these mods allow me to have... How do I do that?
A: Create a custom Game Start, or find one on the workshop that doesn't restrict you to certain races. Personally I like Umbras to be a rare occurence. I used to have some wandering around as nameless recruits and didn't like it, so I removed it.

Q: Will you add more Custom Game Starts later on?
A: I might if I feel inspired, but frankly there are so many on the nexus/workshop, there is probably a better fit for you somewhere than if I tried to make a One-fits-all scenario... To be even more frank, you should google/youtube how to make your own game start, it'll change the way you play kenshi forever.

Q: Why is "Blood" such a bulky item? It takes way too much inventory space.
A: That is intended. Umbra have a high hunger rate, and while they will eventually eat other food if getting very hungry (the same way your greenlander character might eat "raw meat" when starving"), you should play them by constantly moving around and having to murder some bandits, if you could just carry around a stack of 50 blood in your backpack after killing of a herd of starving bandits... that would pretty much screw up the entire point of the intended game-play. You should refrain from ever carrying around more then 1 "Blood", but to each his own I guess.

Q: So how do you Feed Umbras while remaining in your faction base, or when playing as a trader type or whatever?
A: There are some research techs to unlock with this mod early on. (Read in-game descriptors).

Q: Some of your ideas are kind of arbitrary and strange, why wouldn't you change some of them to suit what the majority would like to see?
A: Because I said so.

Q: Your F.A.Q. is stupid, and you don't even have a single comment yet, howcome you allready have one...
A: My grandmother reads Tarot Cards, and she predicted a smarty pants would ask me that... And She told me I should answer that person with a question: "Why is the event known as "The Big Bang" called that way, if there can't be sound in a vacuum?".

Last update for now: the mod that was the culprit is the Many Animations for Species mod here https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3380056396 but in reality, it was my fault because the modmaker said to put this above all species mods and I forgot to do that. So if anyone else has this problem, don't waste 2 hours testing things and just move this mod above all your species mods.

Update: So I fixed my problem at last. I tried moving the mod to the end of my race mods, then to right above my patches. The mod didn't start working again until I moved it (and the patches) all the way to the end of my modlist... pisses me off because I'm not sure which of my patches is interfering with this mod. I'll update again if I find it.

Hey! Just checking in. The Umbra race isn't showing up as available on my character selection, pretty much for any of the starts. I thought it was just modded starts, but I tried one of the official Umbra starts and it reported as not valid. Do you know of any mod conflicts? Do you reckon I should put the tainted blood further down on the modlist? Thanks!

Would it be possible to gather blood from people by killing them with something like the bleeders needle? (a -100 medical item) Maybe give it to the player when they use said item on a downed enemy? To prevent the need of a kill item.

@azrieljohnson afaik they won't grab blood from blood storage. If there's blood in the food storage, they should prioritize blood over other food. I'd love to make other foods forbidden to them, but unfortunately it's impossible given the nature of Kenshi's coding. Thanks for the kind words.

Are they supposed to feed from the Blood storage? Also, I've run into problems occasionally with them not eating blood from food storage. I don't want my Umbras to starve if I'm off somewhere else doing something. :)

Also, love the mod! This is the best vampire mod on Steam.

@Krayt I may have manually removed blood from slaves' inventories to prevent them from being looted and killed. In general, this mod won't place blood in slaves' inventories. the runaway slaves in Stobe's gamble are another example of that, otherwise they'd get killed by being enslaved. ((then again you could just use my other mod "Layken's slave murder fix")). But yeah, starting as umbra rebirth slaves can be quite challenging due to the high hunger rate. My recommendation would be to open FCS, add blood to rebirth slaves and use my slave murder fix mod, and don't forget to reimport game, hope that helps.

Is it normal to not find blood in Slave's inventories In Rebirth with the Slave Umbra start?

Very cool, thank you!

@Rocketsocks88 Both. The shek umbra have strongest stats when t comes to healing and bleeding. They have a bit tougher limbs too. The catch is ofc their hunger, whichj is about on par with a gorillo. All in all I wanted Umbra to be "more than human" but when playing a new game, you'll struggle like any other starving waster with an iron stick, getting beaten up by everybody else. The hunger can also be quite hard to manage early game, especially with multiple umbra characters.
