TRN Islander 2 Hybrid - Model Number IS6 - 2nd Generation Hull "Derwent" - 2nd Generation Hybrid Drivetrain

I present the Islander 2 Hybrid, the 6th product in my line of Islander boats. This represents an overhaul of the Islander’s drivetrain, incorporating a new, custom-made hybrid drivetrain. This makes the Islander more environmentally friendly and quiet, and slightly extends range. As with each Islander, the controls have been kept as familiar as possible, with two small changes having been made to the 2 Hybrid’s cockpit. On the right hand side there is now an “EV” indicator, which lights up green when the hybrid drive system is ready or active. The behaviour of the left dashboard key has been changed, and it now allows the engines to idle when the boat is stationary. The Islander 2 Hybrid is based on the Islander 2 XT, and the main differences between the 2 XT and 2 Hybrid are the more environmentally friendly exhaust and hybrid drive system of the 2 Hybrid.

The basic Islander drivetrain has been the same from models IS1 to IS5, with two engines and a propellor, 2 gearboxes, 1 clutch, and 1 generator to each engine. My new hybrid drivetrain adds 2 batteries and 2 new clutches to each engine, and behind the clutches are 1 motor and 1 generator. It also adds a total of 3 electrical relays. The generator ensures that the hybrid system never dips below 80% charge (along with the relays), and the motor is used in place of the engine starter. I have also added 3 catalytic convertors which virtually removes all thick and harmful exhaust.

From rest, as you increase the throttle the motors propel the boat forwards, until engine RPS is high enough for them to start, at which point the motor is disconnected from the drivetrain and the engines propel the boat forwards. If the hybrid system battery is below 80%, then the hybrid generators will engage to charge the batteries, and then disengage again. When you decrease the throttle to zero, the engine RPS will decrease, and the engine will turn off. If the throttle is very low, then the hybrid system and motors will do all the work.

The Islander is a small/medium passenger transport vessel with a long range, designed to ferry passengers back and forth between islands, the mainland, and outlying bases, like oil rigs. It can also be used for tours, thanks to its great visibility. It is also capable of some rescue missions, with its winches, fire hose outlets and huge stores of equipment. The Islander can also complete extremely long journeys and is able to make multiple round trips from Sawyer to the Arctic on a single tank of fuel. It also copes incredibly well with extreme weather and waves thanks to its high air intakes, low propellors and rudder, and low centre of gravity.

Advised top speed is 30km/h with a range of 410-500km. Cabin capacity is 48 passengers and 3 crew. Rear deck capacity is 10 seated and 20 standing, weather permitting. Diesel fuel only.

Features:
- Custom hybrid drivetrain system, which operates entirely automatically using my own microcontroller, saving fuel and also making the Islander 2 Hybrid more environmentally friendly
- Custom depth alert system that sounds a buzzer on a timer
- Custom engine alert systems that sound a buzzer when certain conditions are met
- Custom automatic heating system that switches on below 12°C
- Custom refuelling circuit and microcontroller to save space
- Custom position lights blinker system and microcontroller
- Custom winch systems with microcontroller
- Stats display (not my own)
- Touchscreen autopilot/navigation display with keyboard to enter exact waypoints (not my own)
- Touchscreen radio with 999 possible channels (not my own)
- Water depth display (not my own)
- Well positioned cabin lighting with subtle coloured mood lights and guidance floor lights
- Bilge pump system
- Custom winch systems that can be used to tow other boats
- Rear facing camera with wide angle display for visibility
- Stormlink compatible
- Emergency roof hatches
- Fire hose outlet systems, 2 front, 2 rear
- Spacious cabin with 48 seats, sofas, crew area, functional bathroom, and hidden equipment store
- Intelligent hull design to give as much usable cabin and deck space as possible
- Custom branding with Islander logos

Instructions:
- Enter the cabin, you may need to crouch. Walk over to the left dashboard at the front
- Switch on “Electrical Systems”
- Enter the main seat or push the throttle forwards, the boat will begin to move, the engines will eventually kick in
- To stop, simply pull the throttle back, the engines will stop as the boat slows
- If you need the engines to idle, move over to the left dashboard and turn the “Engine Idle” key. This will only allow the hybrid motors to propel the boat, and will allow the engines to generate power. Turn the key off to reconnect the engines to the propellors

Thanks to the generators and solar panels, the batteries will charge during normal use. If they need to be charged more quickly, enter the engine idle mode and power will be passed only to the main generators. If sat at a dock, you can also use the front charging connector, but this is unlikely to ever be needed.

Thank you so much for reading, and I hope you enjoy my creation! Feel free to also check out my TRN Islander Series collection, which includes all my previous and future Islander boats.

Note - The "Prototype" lettering means nothing, and the boat is fully functional and works exactly as expected. The lettering is only there as I originally did not intend on releasing this hybrid version of the Islander, but decided to anyway, as I want to do a major rework of my Islander line and produce a new Islander 4 boat. I decided to release this also due to my hybrid drive system being fully functional and not having any issues.

Note - My older Combined Throttle/Clutch controller is still included, but is designed for pure diesel drivetrains, so is not used on this boat, and has been replaced on the 2 Hybrid with my Islander Hybrid Drivetrain Controller.

I'll consider doing an engine swap of the Islander 2 or 3, in order to get a bit more power out of it. Again, just watch the Islander collection in case I do.

This is the fastest I have been able to push this particular drivetrain and hull, it is really at its limits here. For the size of cabin that you get and the range you get with this boat, the speed is actually rather fast. This particular version is also designed with efficiency in mind, hence the hybrid drive system.

That said, I am producing a new version using modular engines and a complete design overhaul from the ground up, which should hopefully make it a bit faster. So far it is just a hull, with 2 modular engines, and a fuel tank, so I can't say yet how much faster it will be. I am definitely aiming to make it faster than my previous Islander 1, 2 and 3 boats. Keep watching the collection and it should be there at some point.

In the meantime, if you want a bit more speed out of this version, then disengage the Eco Gear which is on by default. This will let the engine RPS go higher and you will go a bit faster, but with increased fuel burn.

Dont suppose you could make a less efficient fast version? I find this is a really nice boat but painfully slow
