Design and description

This is Yukikaze: The eight ship of the Kagerō-class destroyer Type A from the Imperial Japanese Navy. The Kagerō-class was pretty similar compared to the predecessor: Asashio-class, but it was slightly enlarged (111M / 118M) and had installed several upgrades including the position of the torpedo reloads for the foward launcher where installed in front of the tube instead of the rear.

They displaced 2065 metric tons (2032 long tons) at standard load and 2529 metric tons (2489 long tons) at deep load. The ships measured 118.5 meters (388 ft 9 in) OV, with a beam of 10.8 meters (35 ft 5 in) and a draft of 3.76 meters (12 ft 4 in). They where larger and displaced more thus where more stable than the Asashio-class.

They had 3 Kampon water-tube boilers and 2 geared turbines making around 52.000 SHP propelling the ship at a 35 knots maximum.

Armament

The ships originally where equipped with 3 turrets with each having two Type 3 12.7CM/50 naval cannons that where "capable" of AA fire if needed.
Later they got away with the X Turret and placed more AA guns (Yukikaze. 1945). They had 2 Type 92 Quadruple 610mm torpedo launchers that used the deadly Type 93 "Long Lance" torpedo.
Originally they had two twin 25MM Type 96 AA cannons and from 1942 to 43 they added another twin 25MM in front of the bridge. In 1945, Yukikaze -one of the 80~ destroyers that the IJN made- survived, had 25x 25MM and 4x 13.2MM Type 95 AA guns to help on convoy escorting.

They where later equipped with the Type 13 Radar and Type 22, Hamakaze being the first one to get a radar but only getting the Type 22.

In Stormworks

I tried to create the ship as historically accurate as possible in a 3:4 scale to be both somewhat usable and big enough to be able to detail it as much as I could. Since I have an immense respect for the ship and its history. Consider this as a kind of tribute.

The version I worked on is the 1943 version with the Type 22 radar and an additional triple 25MM on front of the bridge (they are triple so it looks better than having two guns and a big space between them). I also choose this version so it would be less laggy compared to the 1945 version that has a ton of AA mounts. Not only it looks cooler with the three twin Type 3 guns but it is a lot easier to keep a fully equipped crew on it.

The ship reaches its irl designed speed and can be controlled with the telegraph on the side of the helmsman (it has 4 speeds foward: Dead, Slow, Half and Full, and 4 speeds astern: Dead, Slow, Half and full. It has a complete and somewhat accurate interior and working guns (their range is 3.2KM due to Stormworks limitations).

She is extremely nimble and fast, something that I am really proud of. She has a fast rudder response since I acknowledge that since she is a destroyer she should turn in a rather fast manner. Unfortunately she doesn't have torpedoes mainly because I couldn't figure out a good looking launcher to put them on. Since I went with looks and "authentic" navigation experience the torpedoes where an afterthought. The guns where the first thing that existed on the ship so what happened was that the ship was built around the guns, not the otherway around.

How to Set Sail and Use Yukikaze

First you need to get on the bridge then enter on the helmsman position on the highest floor of the bridge. Pressing one time the W key will light up all boilers and put them on a idle state where to keep noise down I putted generators so they would be atleast doing something useful.

After the boilers created pressure it will automatically send steam to the turbines. Pressing W again will bring her to the "Dead" speed setting which makes her move at around 3.4 kts. Pressing W again will bring her to the "Slow" speed setting and she will accelerate further to 8 kts. Pressing W again will put the "Half" which she will accelerate to 18 kts and finally pressing W again will put her on "Full" which makes her reach her top speed which is 35 kts.

A and D controls the Rudder and by pressing one you will activate her foghorn. On the wall behind the helm you can find the radio and the light control for Deck, Navigation Lights and the lights for the bridge instruments.

To control the guns, there is a seat on each turret that can be used for targeting and shooting. To load there is a elevator that constantly keeps a shell on the top so that on the loader seat you can open each breech and load the guns.
Additionally you can give directions, bearings and automatically give the elevation to the guns if someone is on the rangefinder keeping an eye on targets.

To reload the main ammo hoist in the turret basket you can go to the ammo storage and manually hoist the shells to the main ammo hoister. There are buttons to aid you on that if needed.

Something hitted you and Yukikaze is flooding? You can activate the bilge pumps on the engineering space on the turbine room.

Special Thanks
-√s- iTzRaazor: For providing models so I could get a detailed look at a similar ship and directing me to create the screenshots can you see on the slideshow.
-√s- Lord Juggernaut: For testing the ship since the start and helping me to improve it.
-√s- Elite: For showing me that I created something majestic and that I should've keep it up.
-√s- LeoThunderBr: Being the one to provide me the reference material so I could build the interior and other misc stuff around the ship.

Future Additions

While working on some private projects, with the help of Rowan from the SMH server I was able to make a decent overall FCS with his rangefinder fire director and turret syncronizer system. That same system is coming soon to Yukikaze and the future Yūdachi that is nearly complete. With it I will be adding a autoloading system so with two onboard you are able to control the ship and to shoot the guns.

I plan on updating some misc interior places to make them more accurate and adding more instruments on to aid both navigation and combat features.

For more information please contact me and I help you whenever possible.

you can take the headphones on the helm by using the select tool while you have the ship on the workbench. I will keep the vehicle as is since everything had a reason to be the way it is.

All's fair. Anything in life can take up quite a bit of time. I'm just glad they weren't abandoned.
