MAX Light Rail 1986-2002

Description
Opening in 1986 in Portland, Oregon, the MAX (Metropolitan Area eXpress) Light Rail system initially operated a fleet of 26 Type 1 light rail trains on a 15-mile route between Gresham and downtown Portland, creating the first rail transit service in the Portland area since 1958. These trains were manufactured by Bombardier Transportation, and seated 76 people, with a total capacity of 166.

In 1997, the first Type 2 trains, Siemens SD660s, were added to the MAX inventory (making MAX the first operator of low-floor light rail vehicles), and a year later the Westside MAX extension opened between Gresham and Hillsboro. The Type 2 trains could seat 12 fewer people than the Type 1s, but had the same overall capacity as there was more room for nonseated passengers. (They originally had 72 seats, but eight were removed to provide room for bicycles.)

2001 brought the introduction of the Airport MAX, a line running between downtown Portland and the Portland International Airport. With the opening of a second MAX line, the original Portland-Gresham-Hillsboro line became known as the Blue Line, with the newly-built Airport MAX being named the Red Line.

In 2002, Tri-Met redesigned its corporate identity, changing its name to TriMet (no hyphen), and introducing a blue, white, and yellow livery for the vehicles in its fleet. A new train, the Type 3 (also a Siemens SD660), was introduced, and was the first model to wear the new livery. Plans to overhaul and repaint the older Type 1 and Type 2 trains were put into motion, but three Type 1s remain unpainted as of 2021, as the program was terminated in 2018 since by that time the Type 1s were only a few years from retirement. Additionally, several Type 2s still wear the pre-2002 livery as of 2021.

This livery is a modification of the 1986-2002 MAX Light Rail livery, as seen on the Type 1 and Type 2 trains, with the design altered to fit the shaping and configuration of the Commuter Sprinter. Specifically, this livery depicts a westbound Blue Line train on its way to Hillsboro.

Note: The pantographs are not automatically included when selecting this livery, and must be added manually.
