CODM2 - Mordring - The Dark Hand

Description
A routine assignment lead you to investigation of a cryptic organisation called the Dark Hand. Who are they? What are their goals? Only one way to find out.

This map is a love letter to classic dungeon crawls meant for a level 1 party (level 2 possible for slightly easier beginning). It can get challenging so a balanced party is recommended. By the time of completion you should reach level 4.

Estimated time of completion depends greatly on your pace of progression, attention to lore and other factors (mainly RNG in combat) but the average playthrough should take 2-3 hours.

Hints (minor spoilers):

All kinds of gear provided in the initial room as well as a camp to adjust your spells and a couple vendors, one with identification, available. Just roll your characters and worry about equipment once inside.

I've tried to implement hints to minor riddles in lore entries but just for the sake of players who don't read those: Rings are the literal Key in this adventure. Always pick them up and don't sell them!

If you seem stuck, explore another path. If you have bad luck with chests and thieves tools look for the Master Key.

Try playing on the intended difficulty: Authentic. If it proves too hard, nerf the mobs via settings instead of going into Story Mode as it also reveals all the hidden doors that are closed for a reason and opening them too early may mess with your progression. Don't worry, there is no potentially missable content behind them, they are just implemented as shortcuts to your main camp once you clear successive rooms.

METAGAMING hint, read at your own discretion: thunderwave/shatter, turn undead and silence while not necessary to win will greatly facilitate the progression.

FINALLY ! I had some spare time to play the module again and I made it :) as you meta-suggested the loot was lost somewhere in the digital abyss of the map ;) so I started over which was quite fun, so thanks again for making the map and for your help ! Take care and keep rollin' dice and slashing villains

Hey, let's go metagaming then :)

There is a fire themed fight in the middle of the map, the same room that has teleporter further into the complex - the only way to the door you're stuck at unless you play on Story which would prematurely reveal the hidden door from the "frost" room (which on all other difficulties is only a mean to backtrack should someone forgot the ring or wanted to go to the entrance vendors). The goblin boss from that fire-themed room has the ring of fire resistance on him.

The only other instance in which you could've missed the ring is if the boss died on a highground which sometimes makes mobs unlootable - a game's known error. In such case loading a save before that fight or if you lack one, replaying the mission is sadly the only option.

Hey DM, thanks for your answer :) as a D&D player and master I appreciate your "in game" answer. I went back to the map but to my greatest shame I must admit I was unable to find the solution. I didn't find any Ring of protection against fire, I re-explored the map in case I mimssed an item but I couldn't find anything. I'm sorry to ask but I feel frustrated not be able to finish your map, could you give me another hint ?

Hi gregauriol. Sorry for not reponding earlier, had a busy couple days.

Glad you're ejoying the map. I must admit the hint "quenching" isn't the best wording but that's what I rolled with. It means putting out fire and, going with other hints in the map, that should give you enough info to proceed: you need a ring that makes fire less scary.

Sorry for the convoluted hints but as a long-time DM back in the day I don't like giving players direct answers :) If you still need direct solution and where to find it, let me know.

Hi Mordring, I really enjoyed your map as it's a tough challenge if you start level 1, so thank you :) BUT I must confess I'm stuck by the riddle "only those capable of Quenching their curiosity can enter". I ran around all the map but I couldn't find a way to open that door, could you gimme a hint ?
