BMS Classic - Chapter Collection: <to be added>

What is BMS Classic?

BMS Classic started out as a simple mod aiming to undo some of the changes brought to Black Mesa in 1.0 and 1.5, such as unnecessary railroading, insultingly excessive handholding, questionable balance decisions, and watered-down combat. Since then, it's evolved into an attempt to bring together the best parts of Black Mesa and Half-Life and expand upon them.

Bringing back HL1 setpieces that didn't make the cut for one reason or another, adding incentive for the player to explore and investigate off the beaten trail, trusting players to be able to think and reason their way through puzzles without force-feeding them the answer, expanding upon areas of the facility to make it feel more alive, and making the player have to think about how they fight to survive - that's what BMS Classic aims to do.

Many maps have also received an additional detail pass, making them more atmospheric and immersive by way of enhanced/reworked lighting and improved water visuals. Attempts have also been made to improve performance on some particularly troublesome maps, but given Source's limitations, there's only so much that can be done.

Is BMSC compatible with [insert mod here]?

It depends. Other chapter mods, such as the Chapter Overhaul mods or VOX Restoration mods, aren't compatible. BMSC extensively edits many of the game's maps, so any other mods that edit maps are going to run into conflicts. Compatibility with some of these mods (namely the VOX Restoration mods and Black Mesa Character Expansion) is something I'd like to investigate further down the line.

Who's behind BMSC?

BMSC is primarily a joint effort, between Vassago Rain and myself. Some chapters also have additional support or resources from other modders, as listed in the Contributors section.

It's important to note that BMSC is fundamentally a two-man effort. There's only so much we have the time, resources, and ability to do. As such, we've had to make decisions about what does or doesn't get added/changed. We're just two people with a love for Half-Life doing what we can here, to try and realize Black Mesa's full potential. If you have specific questions about why certain changes were made, or why things were added/removed/etc., feel free to ask.

What's in this download?

This download is the BMSC edition of Lambda Core. The grand finale of the Earthbound chapters has received significant overhauls, from layout to lighting to combat - from some carefully applied coloured lighting to add a bit more visual interest between areas, to reworked enemy encounters for the sake of making the chapter into the grand finale it's supposed to be, to rectifying some long-standing design/navigation issues that have plagued the chapter since 2012 - BMSC Lambda Core aims to bring out the chapter's full potential on the Source engine. BMSC Lambda Core also integrates the damaged/destroyed hallways on map H from Lieutenant_America's aptly named Lambda Core Map H Overhaul mod (with permission).

A more detailed changelog can be found in the Workshop download folder - for this addon, that'll be somewhere like Steam/steamapps/workshop/content/362980/2748646346. The contents of the changelog can also be found in the pinned discussions.

I strongly recommend installing my Elite Grunt HP fix plugin and Elite Grunt model fix alongside this mod. Additionally, if you'd like to have the original, 2012 BM credits music play during the final portal fight, a small addon to implement it can be found HERE. The description for the music addon also contains instructions if you should want to make a different (or even custom) track play during the portal fight.

I'd like to apologize for the harsh criticism I gave a while back. I've relaxed a lot more in recent months. Also I remembered the hivehand existed and got better at grenades. So, take my old complaints with a handful of salt. Sorry!

Interesting, thanks for the reply. If I had the time or skill I would probably make my own compatibility patch for both of them, perhaps even upload it to the workshop because I'm sure a bunch of people would love to use both at the same time. Nice work nonetheless.

I believe it depends on load order, but I'm not sure how the game would prioritise between them. All I can say is that I wouldn't recommend trying it, because it's very likely you'll run into problems.

So what exactly happens when you have both the Chapter Overhaul and the Classic mods installed at the same time? Does it just crash or pick between one or the other based on load order?

@Winter Ranger
It's unlikely that we'll add expanded universe stuff like Shepherd in LC, since the mission statement is to improve the base game itself. A cameo, maybe, but even that's far into the future.

The standalones were originally made so people would be able to do mods of their own. Contact Birdie and ask him for permission if you've got a project in the works.

I would love to see a version that's compatible with the "Shepard in Lambda Core" mod, or for you guys to add your own interpretation of that scene to the last map of your mod.

I also wanted to ask if you would be fine with using your mod as a base for implementing some of the changes added in Half-Life: MMOD to Lambda Core? I think your mod, plus that, would make Lambda Core a very challenging, very good final chapter for the earth section. Just wanted to ask before I started planning anything.
