Slightly More Interesting Russia

Description
About

Slightly More Interesting Russia is a mod that makes it more interesting to play in and around the area of the Russian Empire in CK3 in 867, by implementing mechanisms to allow for the creation of the russian culture.

Features
  • No russian culture in 867 start
  • Hand positioned east slavic vanilla cultures in its place
  • Decision to establish the russian culture as a Norse ruler in russia
  • Several events depending on whether the AI takes the decision, or yourself
  • Historical weighting so that the AI Rurikid is more likely to take the decision if you don't
  • Decision to unite the east slavs, to offer a counterpart to the west and south ones

Historical accuracy

The current consensus in Russian historiography is that the Rurikid dynasty descended from ethnically Scandinavian Varangians and that the term "Russia" originated from Old Norse. Which means that the setting offered by CK3 in the start date 867 is completely inaccurate. The Rus' culture can't exist in areas where the Norse hasn't influenced it, and it makes no sense for Rurik himself to convert to this culture. This mod aims to address some of those inaccuracies by distributing the dead east slavic cultures instead of the russian one in 867, and setting up a chain of events that could lead to the emergence of the russian culture. Because I used the vanilla CK3 cultures however, the positioning of some of the cultures is still quite bad.

In the end, I believe that this mod is more accurate than vanilla CK3, but still not totally accurate.

Compatibility
Achievements Compatibility

This mod is Ironman Compatible but will disable Achievements.

Known compatibilies
Because this mod uses only vanilla cultures and does not change them at all, it will be compatible with a lot of things that adds content to cultures. I have validated it to be compatible by default with the following mods with large player bases:

Load order with the above mods does not matter.

Known incompatibilies

File overwrites
This mod overwrites a number of files from vanilla CK3. Any other mod that changes those files will cause issues, ranging from slight incompatibilies to mod-breaking issues. Thankfully I play with a rather large mod list and have found no other mods than the one listed above causing issues because they change any of the following files. The list that follows is for other mods that I don't play with.

This mod overwrites the history of the kingdoms where the russian culture is present in 867:
  • history/provinces/k_ruthenia.txt
  • history/provinces/k_novgorod.txt
  • history/provinces/k_galicia-volhynia.txt
  • history/provinces/k_moldavia.txt
  • history/provinces/k_white_rus.txt

It also overwrites the history of the russian people to distribute the proper culture: history/characters/russian.txt.

I also made some changes to the "Have the Realm Embrace Local Tradition" (assimilate_local_traditions_decision) to remove the exception set by CK3 for Eastern Europe specifically which caused Dyre and Rurik to pretty much instaneously convert to their local cultures, to let them some time to have the chance to create the russian culture. Apart from total conversion mods, I found no other mods changing that decision.

Have you also made a new goverment type for Rus'? Have you used the fact that Ilmen sloven were the first culture to diverge in language from common slavic?

In an ideal world you could collab with this guy:

And at the same time keep the compatibility with EPE, CFP etc. I really wish that region gets the love it deserves as it's no less exciting and intriguing than the west.

Cheers for your hard work and happy holidays in advance!

@[Army of Two] AXIS why? there were only one Rus back then, which started from Novgorod and was later labeled as Kievan Rus, which fallen after Mongol Invasion. Ukraine and Russia as modern entities were not present.

dont u think that polish culture on the last screen looks a out of line? I mean, there were no poles, only polanians. IMHO in a default game, all Eastern cultures are simply conditionally united into the Russian one, since there is no visible border between them, and Rurik did not so much create a new culture or hybrid, as simply was assimilated. btw nice work

@Knez Severus Matthias It depends what you mean exactly! Basically, the russian culture will get the innovations from Norse and the culture of your capital county, but when you merge, any of the east slavic cultures counties that you control will turn to Russian. In addition, the neighbouring east slavic rulers (doesn't matter which culture exactly as long as they're east slavs) with high enough opinion of you will flip as well, although the impact on their realm will be less significant. After the merge, there are no specific decisions, but you can place rulers of your new culture in charge of other counties and hope that they'll convert the culture.

@[Army of Two] AXIS I would say that this mod already improves the Kievan Rus experience! By removing the Russian culture in 867, it also opens up the possibility to create another Norse/Slav hybrid in the russian area. My current in-depth run with this mod is actually a competitor of the Russian culture that started in Kyiv :) I let Rurik create the russian culture, and created my own on my side using the hybridisation feature introduced with Royal Court. And now we compete for power in Russia, which is great fun.
