IAH-9 Spiral - Light Utility/SAR Helicopter

Description
Type:
Utility/SAR Helicopter

Speed:
160km/h

Range:
140km

Description

A light utility and SAR helicopter designed for use on trains and ships. It can be useful for mobile deployment and container loading via skid magnets, also comes with controllable harness and additional seating for rescue duties.

Operation

Master power and radios is on by default.

  • Turn the engine on.
  • Wait for rotor RPS to reach 34, throttle is automatic.
  • Use hotkeys 1 and 2 to increase and decrease set altitude.
  • Press hotkey 5 to toggle mouse control and use the mouse to yaw, the mouse control indicator will light up if turned on.
  • Toggle auto-hover or terrain following on if needed, can also be toggled via left and right arrow keys.
  • Press hotkey 6 to toggle cruise mode, this will control pitch and roll for automatic forward flight. The cruise mode indicator will light up if turned on.

Autopilot

The helicopter features an easy to use GPS autopilot, simply insert the waypoint coordinates on the large overhead keypad and turn autopilot on. Adjust set altitude and toggle terrain following as needed, the autopilot will not move if altitude is below 10m.

Harness Winch

You can also control the winch from the handle, using hotkeys 1 and 2 to winch up and down, hotkey 3 to toggle the connector and hotkeys 4 and 5 to open and close doors. When winching yourself up, attach the connector and close the door before leaving the handle. Make sure you're not clipping through the helicopter before leaving the handle, if it does happen, just open and close the door again.

Loading/Unloading Containers

  • Land on the container and turn magnets on. The engine will also gear down and increase throttle for better lifting power.
  • Turn terrain following off, if not off already.
  • When dropping off a container via radio control, open the rear doors (open/close ramp button on the command station) and use the winch camera for a better downward view.
  • Turn magnets off in normal flight.

Magnets can also be activated to lock onto ships after the engine is turned off.

Radio Control

The helicopter can be remotely controlled from the same command station used to control the IAV-8 Buccaneer VTOL aircraft (see links below). Every vehicle uses specific radio frequencies, unless set otherwise. For a list of frequencies, see the command stations' Workshop pages or notes near radio panels ingame.

Default frequencies are used when keypad inputs is set to zero.

When using a command station to set waypoint coordinates, press the "Transmit Waypoint" button to transmit the data back to the aircraft. Orders are stored onboard via this method so that the aircraft will continue on route should radio contact be lost.

Some buttons on the command station will be different. The helicopter manages throttle automatically so throttle displays are not used, STOL mode for the aircraft (hotkey 6 and indicator) is cruise mode for the helicopter, the throttle limiter button turns magnets on and off for the helicopter and the open/close ramp button opens and closes the rear doors.

Well, look at the bright side. If you leave it unattended, nobody will steal it!

But I will add more traditional control modes for future aircraft, the arcade mouse controls is a personal thing.

this is the worst heli ive ever flown. the concept of the set altitude just sucks

I'm sorry but this is the worst heli I've ever flown. Great concept tho

@Crazy Italian - Yeah, I am weird so my vehicles tend to be as well!

The control scheme is actually inspired by other games I've played (WASD to pitch and roll, mouse to steer). My other aircraft tend to have arcade-style controls also.

oh never mind its just the controls are weird

@lucds - It still works fine for me. I haven't downloaded the last update yet so, I don't know if it broke mouse controls. SW updates tend to break stuff (the reason why I don't download updates immediately).

there is no yaw
