10. Cavalaire-sur-Mer, France [Mission]

In 1 collection by ObKrieger
ObKrieger's 7th Infantry Regiment in WWII Series
27 items
Description
This is the tenth mission in a chronological series based on the real actions of the 7th Infantry Regiment throughout North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany, from 1942 to 1945. This map is dedicated to Private First Class Harold Cooperberg, Company G, 7th Infantry Regiment, who was killed in action on August 15th, 1944.

Notes:

-I made the map using a heightmap of the real beach at Cavalaire-sur-Mer. It is (somewhat) geographically accurate, but scaled way down, and I made adjustments to the layout to facilitate better movement.

-Weapons and environment are mostly historically accurate. I will update the mission later with more authentic squads and inventory.

-I am working on updates and new maps. Please let me know if you have any suggestions, friends.

Historical Info:

August 15th, 1944- Cavalaire-sur-Mer, France- Operation Dragoon

After the capture of Rome in June 1944, the 3rd Infantry Division began a two-month period of rest, refit, and training, to prepare for the upcoming invasion of Southern France. The purpose of the invasion- codenamed "Operation Dragoon," was to draw German forces away from the fighting in Northern France, secure another port through which fresh troops and equipment could flow, liberate Southern France, and link up with the rest of the Allies in France to make the final push into Germany. On August 15th, 1944, the division's 7th Infantry Regiment landed at Cavalaire-sur-Mer, against relatively light resistance, and spearheaded the drive into the French Riviera.

Lifting anchor on the 14th the vessels began the last lap of the journey and during the night of 14-15 August 1944 maneuvered into assigned areas off the coast of France. D-Day was dawning and H-Hour had been set for 0800. The assault troops were alerted, given a light meal and went into the waiting LCVPs. Lazily the big guns swung shoreward and at exactly 0630 hours all hell let loose as the combined guns of the fleet blazed away. Overhead, thousands of bombers, in formation, disappeared into the mist. Then adding to the fury of the big guns, came the sound of exploding bombs. Dense, billowing clouds of smoke hid the shoreline. In the morning haze, the assault boats looked like doodle bugs as they darted hither and yon circling off shore, waiting for the naval guns and rocket launchers to lift their fire from the shore batteries and installations. The enemy made no answer to the naval gunfire. Shortly before H-Hour the assault craft commenced darting shoreward and at 0800 the web-footed "Dogfaces" of the Seventh Infantry hit Beach Red. The Second Battalion with Companies "F", "G" and "E" and the 30th Infantry Battle Patrol, from left to right, swarmed ashore. Company "G" had two of its craft hit floating mines and blown to bits with forty men missing and "Fox" Company lost one boat with twenty of its men missing.

Once ashore the Second Battalion moved rapidly through the beach obstacles and mine fields. At 0825 the battalion reported small arms and mortar fire from the right flank and enemy artillery fire was received. At 0850 the troops were on the Line X-Y and a violet grenade was thrown signifying that the enemy defenses in its zone had been neutralized. Objective "C" in the vicinity of La Croix was taken at 1025 and the battalion awaited orders to move on "D", which were soon received. Contact was effected at Point C-1. Small groups of enemy were encountered on the objectives but quickly overcome. The 30th Infantry passed through the White Battalion shortly after noontime and at 1420 the Second Battalion was on Objective "D" and contact was established with both the 15th and 30th Infantries.

ALLIES: As a member of Company G, 7th Infantry Regiment, you are to secure the beach, neutralize enemy defenses in the sector, and secure to road to La Croix. You must then secure La Croix and link up with F.F.I. troops to advance to Cogolin.

AXIS: As a member of Grenadier-Regiment 918, you are to hold off the American landing long enough to allow reinforcements to arrive from the north. Do not let the Americans establish a foothold on the beach!

Great mission! Play both side, very entertaining.
There was a scene bug. In the first phase, on the wooden roof of a German spawn building, there was a raven decoration. This wooden roof would be destroyed by artillery fire, and then the raven decoration would be left hanging there strangely.

Yes, I was on vacation, then came home to a lot of extra work, but I have been slowly chipping away at the next installment. I'm about 75% finished with the map, which will be based on the Battle of Besançon in September 1944.

are you planning on continuing this series? I really enjoyed it

Excellent mission. It felt very much like a large battle. Well done.

Thanks again for the very kind comments. I added an MG and medics for the Americans but I think I forgot to add spawns for them as the battle moves inland. I'll fix that in my first update.

I kept German resistance low because the real landing at Cavalaire went against relatively light opposition. Company G, 7th IR was hit hardest with 20 KIA, but most of those deaths occurred when their LCVPs hit mines offshore. The coastal defenses were mostly manned by Armenian and Azerbaijani "Osttruppen" who surrendered in droves. And unlike the Normandy landings, the pre-invasion aerial and naval bombardment was quite accurate.

I was thinking of making realistic missions for each map based on the real after-action reports, TO/E, casualties, etc. and then more gameplay/balance oriented missions separately. I'll probably do that once I've made all of the maps.

Fun map, some interesting tactical situations. Played solo as US, normal/normal, won first run but died a few times.

Didn't see any medics or US M1919s. Felt that giving the Germans a few more LMGs or emplaced MGs would make for a tougher fight.

Nice work on the map, good looking and fun to move around on.
