Story:
The sailing ship 'Pearl' was originally constructed as a wood hulled East Indiaman ship under the name 'George Legge' for the British and Indian Sailing Packet Line. In 1854, the Gemstone Packet and Steam Transatlantic Company was founded, and soon the SV George Legge was put up for sale. The GPSTC (often shortened to Gemstone or Gem Line) jumped at the opportunity, and bought the old ship for transatlantic service. Refitted with 6 saloon cabins, and an intermediate class, she was renamed to 'Pearl', the first of three ships with that name. On her first voyage under the Gemstone Line, she was caught in a gale so violently, it damaged her port lifeboat, and tore her trysail. She departed London on December 10th 1855, and arrived in Manhattan on January 6th 1856. On her fifteenth voyage, she came to the aid of a wooden tea clipper that was leaking at sea. In October 1858, leaks were discovered in the Pearl's cargo hold, and she was patched up with oak planking before departing Manhattan. By July 1858, the funding for the Gem Class: Jade, Topaz, Amber, and Sapphire was reached, and the new class of packet clippers were ordered. Pearl's wooden hull was old by 1859, and once the Jade completed five voyages by May 1859, the Pearl was sailed to Preston to be broken up.

@bink2006 I believe they were both for salutes and just in case of a war outbreak, but I'm not too sure

@Alex1889 so were they or did they act like salute canons or were they actual war canons?
Alex1889  [author] 5 Jun, 2022 @ 5:56am
@bink2006 Most ships at the time had canons even if they were liners, such as the RMS Persia of 1855 or SS Great Eastern of 1860 :)
