Class description
Battlecruisers (CC) are heavy surface vessels, combining high speed, decent armour and a mix of heavy APS platforms and heavy missiles. They are a essentially a combination of Frigates and Destroyers into one. Battlecruisers are designed to be able to counter most threats, except for submarines. While having thinner armour than Dreadnoughts/Battleships, the heavy firepower and speed will almost always overcome the defensive defficiencies. You can use these ships as mainstay of your fleet and expect them to carry through.

The ship
The Tartarus class is the entry into the Battlecruiser line. Designed as an evolution of the Intrepid and Vanguard classes of cruisers, the Tartarus combines heavy anti-ship cannons with a good AA suite and 8 silo's holding Havoc anti-ship missiles. Even though it has just half the number of guns of the Vanguard, each gun has almost double the firepower. The Tartarus 380mm guns compared to the 300mm guns on the Vanguard sport longer shells and a higher rail charge, allowing for superior penetration power.
The missile suite itself is inferior to the Intrepid, carrying only 8 missiles. They're most useful against ships that don't carry a heavy anti missile suite.
Mobility of the Tartarus is high, sporting a 38m/s top speed and decent turning radius. This allows the Tartarus' captain to engage the terms of engagement in most situations. Armour wise, the Tartarus sports 3m of armour, reinforced around the waterline and heavily reinforced around the engines.
The engines themselves are a hybrid setup of gasturbines for cruising power, and fuel engines for combat power. This allows for superior fuel efficiency during cruise, and a cost-effective power supply during combat operations.

v50, update: The Tartarus was one of the weakest ships in cost efficiency in the entire arsenal, outperformed even by smaller and cheaper vessels.

To counter this, the armour has been revised, guns (especially CIWS) has been revised and the missiles have been tweaked. Should have a much better performance now.
