Random Zombies

Description
Compatible with version 42.0.2 and 41.76 (solo & multiplayer).

This mod lets you customize how many zombies of each type (crawler, sprinter, smart, tough, etc.) appear in your game. Inspired by Customizable Zombies.

Please make sure you've read the FAQ below before commenting if you have any issues.

Features
  • easily customize how many Crawlers, Shamblers, Fast Shamblers or Sprinters appear in the world
  • easily customize how many Smart zombies, which can open doors, appear in the world
  • easily customize how many Tough and Fragile zombies appear in the world
  • more consistent and less CPU-intensive approach than other mods, with customizable update rate

How to customize spawn rates and update rate
  • go to the Random Zombies page during Sandbox creation (make sure the mod is enabled at the main menu for the Random Zombies sandbox tab to appear) or edit your (servername)_SandboxVars.lua file
  • note that Crawler%, Shambler%, FastShambler% and Sprinter% must add up to 100%
  • note that Fragile%, NormalTough% and Tough% must add up to 100%
  • speed defaults to 2% crawlers, 15% shamblers, 78% fast shamblers, 5% sprinters
  • toughness defaults to 100% normal, 0% fragile, 0% tough
  • cognition defaults to 0% smart
  • you can disable the check in the sandbox settings if you know what you're doing/can't be bothered configuring the mod

Frequently Asked Questions & Troubleshooting
  • Can you use it in an existing save?
You can safely enable/disable this mod in an existing save.

  • How does using Random Zombies compare to the vanilla Sprinter Percent setting added in B42?
    - In addition to sprinters, RZ lets you customize how many smart, tough, fragile, crawling, fast and slow zombies you encounter
    - Vanilla will split non-sprinters evenly between fast and slow shamblers. e.g. 10% sprinters would mean 45% slow and 45% fast shamblers
    - Vanilla may suddenly turn a slow zombie into a sprinter on zombie reactivation (e.g. day-only zombie at dawn)

  • I'm getting a lot of red box errors
This is most likely due to a misconfiguration. Please make sure you read the How to customize spawn rates and update rate section above. If you're still having issues, check the actual error messages in your console.txt file or comment below with a link to your console.txt file (it can be found at C:\Users\(yourname)\Zomboid\console.txt, or ~/Zomboid/console.txt on macOS and Linux).

  • I am not seeing the exact number of sprinters I configured
There is a random component to the algorithm, but the probability distribution has been tested to be accurately represented (in the limits of what computers can do, i.e. pseudo-randomness). If you notice a consistent large disparity, please check for conflicts with other mods. If you're still having issues, please run `BLTRandomZombies.fullCheck()` in your Lua console in Debug mode and comment below with a link to the 5 generated files (placed in C:\Users\(yourname)\Zomboid\Lua, or ~/Zomboid/Lua on macOS and Linux).

  • Do I need to set Zombie Lore Speed to Random?
No, the mod will overwrite zombie speed regardless of that setting.

  • What is the Frequency parameter?
Because of how the game works (modability, zombie recycling, etc.), Random Zombies has to check at regular intervals if the zombies are properly configured. Frequency allows you to choose how often RZ should do the check. In practice, the default setting (7500) works really well and you should not have to worry about it.

  • Can you allow the customization of strength, sight, memory as well?
Unfortunately, there's no way to do that that I know of today.

  • Is this mod compatible with Night Sprinters?
    Yes, thanks to TheIlluminati!

Enjoy!

Just wondering if anyone else used this with the Trash and Corpses mod before? I used the Only Trash and Skeletons Without Clothes option and I got zombie skeletons! Thought it was funny.

Does this mod allow for a zombie speed that is between that of a fast shambler and a sprinter?

@challenger man for solo, the base game only lets you set sandbox options at the creation of the world, but there are mods to edit sandbox options in an existing save, like this one for B41 (you can find one for B42 as well) https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2670674997

Hey man, that's a great mod! I was wondering if we could edit settings for a solo save. I've been trying to look for "SandboxVars.lua file" but it doesn't seem to appear in the folder. :Burn:

@belette hi, I run on b41! apparently I was just dumb and was able to fix it. The issue stems from the mod not being added to the Steam Workshop mod setting when editing the world settings while hosting. It works fine in solo because the mods are automatically integrated into the game. A lot of the people here probably just added the mod directly in the mod settings tab in their own server and not on the steam workshop as well. Not a bug just a skill issue

with this mod can i adjust the frequency of it kind of zed based on time alive? i mean, is possible to configure to zombies become smarter, tougher and faster after x days

@aizen I've seen people report this lately, so it's probably a bug in this mod due to some recent change in PZ. I cannot repro on my end though, so it would be useful if you could tell me exactly what you're running (PZ version, solo/dedicated/in-game hosted? if in-game hosted, are you the host?) and if you can repro the bug in a new game with only this mod enabled.

all add up to 100% but still many sprinters spawn while hosting. it seems like the issue is due to the zombie lore. Looks like it overrides the random zombies mod, because if you set the zombie lore to "random" in hosting majority of the zombies are sprinters. If i set it to proper zombies, not a single sprinter spawns (even if i set the mod to 100% sprinter). Hoping for a fix, thanks!

make sure that your sprinters/shamblers/fast shamblers all add up to 100 percent @amthonys or else it will make all zombies sprinters
