McDonnell Douglas F/A-18C Hornet

Description

The McDonnell Douglas F/A-18C Hornet is a single-seat, supersonic, twin-turbine multirole combat jet; operating as both a fighter and attack aircraft. The C variant comprises numerous avionics upgrades, and supports a wider variety of armaments including long-range missiles.

This workshop creation is a 1:1 scale replica of the F/A-18C Hornet, with a simplified but realistic cockpit and display suite.

Contents
  • Specifications
  • Start-up Procedure
  • Radar & Sensors
  • Weapons & Armaments
  • Countermeasures
  • Flight Controls

General Characteristics
Size: 45(31¹)×20(16²)×67 blocks (W×H×L)
Max Speed: ~320 knots (~165m/s)
Stall Speed: ~70 knots (~35m/s)
Fuel: ~9320ℓ
Fuel Rate: up to ~375ℓ/min

¹ wings folded
² landing gear up

Armaments
Guns: 1× 20mm M61A1 Vulcan (Light AC, 100 rounds)
Hardpoints: 2× wingtip rails, 4× under-wing rails, 1× under-fuselage rail (7 total)

The inner under-wing rails and the under-fuselage rail are wet; fuel can be extracted from any external fuel tanks attached to these hardpoints, and the IFEI expects (but does not require) the fuel level on Composite Number Channel 1.

Quick Start
  1. Close Canopy
  2. Battery ON
  3. APU ON
  4. Engine Crank L (HOLD)
  5. Engine Crank R (HOLD)
  6. Parking Brake OFF¹
¹ turn ON to disable parking brake

Additional Steps
  • Press Hotkey 2 to turn on HUD and MFDs.
  • Set Taxi Lights On/Off to ON for low-light takeoff/landing.
  • Set Gear Extend/Retract to ON once airborne.

The F/A-18C Hornet is equipped with an AN/APG-73 I-band pulse-Doppler radar, which is capable of detecting and tracking multiple targets across a wide area. The results of these scans are displayed using a B-Scope display. Targets will remain visible for a few seconds after detection, but currently there is no locking feature.

Operational Limits
Azimuth: ±70° (140° total)
Distance: up to 9600m
FOV X: 18°
FOV Y: 18°
Scan Rate: 12Hz
Sweep Rate: 68.75°/s

Activation Procedure
  1. Gear Extend/Retract ON¹
  2. Radar ON
¹ turn ON to retract landing gear

Make sure to press Hotkey 2 to turn on HUD and MFDs. If the radar is inactive, a SIL cross will appear in the lower-left corner of the display.

The F/A-18C Hornet is equipped with a 20mm M61A1 Vulcan. This workshop creation provides a nose-mounted light autocannon with 100 high-explosive rounds. This aircraft is also equipped with seven hardpoints; three of which support automatic fuel intake from mounted drop tanks.

By default, this aircraft is equipped with four AIM-120 radar-guided missiles on the four under-wing hardpoints.

For each ordinance type, the Stores page will display a two-letter label on the corresponding hardpoint. If the hardpoint is empty, no label will be visible. When a specific ordinance type is selected via the UFC, one or more of these labels will become boxed to indicate that they have been selected for weapon release.

Ordinance Types
  1. Utility (UL)
  2. Fuel (FL)
  3. Unguided Bomb (UB)
  4. Laser-Guided Bomb (LB)
  5. GPS-Guided Bomb (GB)
  6. Rocket (RK)
  7. Rocket Pod (RP)
  8. Laser-Guided Missile (LM)
  9. GPS-Guided Missile (GM)
  10. Radar-Guided Missile (RM)
  11. Torpedo (TP)
  12. Cannon (CN)

Depending on the ordinance type, the weapon release button will trigger one of three actions:
  • For utility and fuel, it will release the ordinance from a single selected hardpoint.
  • For rocket pods and cannons, it will send an On signal on Composite On/Off Channel 1 to the ordinance on every selected hardpoint for as long as the button is pressed.
  • For all other weapon types, it will launch the ordinance from a single selected hardpoint.

Arming Procedure
  1. Gear Extend/Retract ON¹
  2. Master Arm ON
  3. Set UFC to 1-12, depending on desired ordinance type
¹ turn ON to retract landing gear

Firing Procedure
  • Press and hold the Spacebar to fire the autocannon.
  • Press/Hold Hotkey 4 for weapon release.
  • Press Hotkey 6 for emergency jettison (release all).

The F/A-18C Hornet is equipped with four chaff dispensers. Press Hotkey 3 to dispense a single chaff.

Axis and Hotkey Controls
W/S: Pitch
A/D: Roll
Left/Right: Yaw/Nose-Wheel Steering
Up/Down: Throttle
Spacebar: Gun Fire
Hotkey 1: Nav Lights On/Off
Hotkey 2: HUD On/Off
Hotkey 3: Dispense Chaff
Hotkey 4: Weapon Release
Hotkey 5: None
Hotkey 6: Emergency Jettison

Additional Notes
The F/A-18C Hornet can be refuelled via a hose anchor on the right-hand side of the fuselage. A push button is located directly above the panel which will open and close the fuel port.

I intend to continue working on this aircraft, most notably to include additional UI elements on the HUD and MFDs, and to improve the stability of the airframe at high speeds (as the default Gyro struggles). If you find any bugs along the way, please let me know!

maybe you could add an ordinance cart to rearm or to give people the ability to copy/paste ordinance onto the jet for a mission

To create a compatible rocket pod, you need to ensure that the hardpoint ordinance type is set to 7, and you need to take the Composite On/Off channel 1 input and convert it into an On/Off signal for the rocket pod trigger. In flight, make sure the UFC is set to 7, the master arm is on, and the landing gear is retracted. Pressing and holding 4 will fire rockets from all pods at the same time.
