Description
Designate your heir freely from your close/extended family and dynasty at any authority level for no cost at any time. Includes memories and opinions.

ABOUT
Replaces the vanilla designate heir character interaction in the diplomacy menu.

You can designate any member of your close family, extended family or your dynasty as your heir. The cost is free and can be done under any level of authority right from the start of the game.

You, your previous heir, your new heir and your children will all have a memory of your action, and all of them will have an opinion of you, either positive or negative depending on which side of the designation they are.

COSTS
While the default mode is free of charges, you can change the mod's game rule to implement vanilla prestige and influence costs if you prefer to be charged for the action.

NOTE
AI cannot break vanilla rules.
Administrative governments have to abide by vanilla administrative rules, so noble families can only choose close family members.

Compatibility
Ironman = yes

Also not compatible with any other mod that changes the vanilla designate heir interaction. So if one of the mods you already use like a cheat mod for example replaces the vanilla designate heir character interaction, then place this mod after it in the load order.

WARNING
There appears to be a bug in game atm that causes a CTD if you attempt to assign any parent or grandparent as your designated heir, so DO NOT DO THAT. You have been warned!

@Ruthydufy
wow I never noticed that nor even understand how I made that mistake :steamfacepalm:

But it is only a game rule tooltip error, the actual costs incurred are in fact the vanilla prestige and influence costs.
I'll push a fix for the tooltip soon, tyvm for the embarrassing report :steamthumbsup:

Love the mod but a odd choice to go with piety cost. Does it not make more sence for prestige cost?

No admin does not allow free heir designation.

Yes the mod replaces the vanilla interaction but AI cannot break vanilla rules like the player can.

Does AI use this mod to designate heirs?

@nyyfandan
Yes but I put in a gate to prevent that possibility in the last update, so you won't have to check who your heir has designated and them in turn, etc.

Plus the AI is still restricted to the normal CK3 designate heir rules, so hopefully there won't be any issues using DHF now.

CAVEAT: I only check up to 5 heirs, so if the AI does create a loop any longer than that I'll have to increase the depth of the check.

@Lost Nomad what do you mean by looping? like you designate your brother then your AI brother also designates you?

As of CK3 1.14.1 hotfix

You can now designate a heir as pre 1.13, so anyone really but ofc still restricted to your title succession laws.

CAUTIONARY WARNING the new feature Paradox kindly added for modders to designate heirs freely again comes with a warning that it is essentially going against the game code so may cause CTDs if the selected heir causes looping.

I have gates in place to protect from CTDs as I did pre 1.13 but there may be crashes ahead on the road ahead :steammocking: so please report any CTDs and try to give me details of who you were, who you designated, your title, etc

Basically the crash investigation bureau needs as much information as possible including your bank account number, pin number, and password :steamhappy:
