I was able to fix the issue.
Turns out I also needed to generate tangents when exporting.
The edited mesh files are still smaller than the originals, so I suppose there is still something wrong with them.
But it looks like the quality is preserved on an export now.
Thank you for bringing this issue to light as I am sure I would have never noticed it myself.
Importing the edited mesh into blender shows the issue.
Importing both the original mesh as well as opening the .blend file of my edit show it being smooth as it should.
Something went wrong with the export process, I will try to fix it.
