Nukes strong, better than dinky little HE missiles.
You're right that well nuclear weapon do not care much where they detonate. however, it cannot be said that nuclear weapons are abysmally weak in space because it has nothing to ram against. that's just wrong. that's not where the power of nuclear detonation comes from, but it is the absurd amounts of released energy in form of electromagnetic waves and heat protons (basically radiation).
being in space proximity to nuclear detonation is enough to kill you (or your ship and crew). the only thing that will save you in space is distance. so basically nukes in space would evaporate anything close enough and that will cause detonation that would propagate through the ship.
basically you can imagine it like what they do to squeeze deuterium to create plasma... high power laser that will evaporate part of the target (squeezing fuel extremely hard... so that strong nuclear forces can be overcomed) to set of the nuclear fusion.
