It's all fun and games until the nuke-spamming enemy capital ships show up ^^.

Nukes strong, better than dinky little HE missiles.

I would like to fix you on some points mister @Zeronidus ...

You're right that well nuclear weapon do not care much where they detonate. however, it cannot be said that nuclear weapons are abysmally weak in space because it has nothing to ram against. that's just wrong. that's not where the power of nuclear detonation comes from, but it is the absurd amounts of released energy in form of electromagnetic waves and heat protons (basically radiation).

being in space proximity to nuclear detonation is enough to kill you (or your ship and crew). the only thing that will save you in space is distance. so basically nukes in space would evaporate anything close enough and that will cause detonation that would propagate through the ship.

basically you can imagine it like what they do to squeeze deuterium to create plasma... high power laser that will evaporate part of the target (squeezing fuel extremely hard... so that strong nuclear forces can be overcomed) to set of the nuclear fusion.

Nuclear weapons have all the deflectors, fusion/fission layers and starters in their cores already.
If they relied on ambient atoms, they'd be incredibly inefficient.

I'm going to be a nerd too for argument's sake XD

Nuclear explosions are chain reactions. The atmosphere/oxygen levels don't effect it as much as traditional explosions because it doesn't require oxygen based combustion. However, without an atom rich atmosphere with which rogue neutrons continue to collide and therefore propagate the chain reaction the nuke is pretty abysmal in space.

That being said I also believe the nukes in vanilla are lacklustre so would it be possible to do something in between? For example shields create the vanilla explosion but direct hull impacts create a much larger and devastating explosion?

A nuke in space throws enough of its casing out to have a decent blast at close ranges, and also are simply bright enough to melt armor. They are much less effective than in an atmosphere, but still orders of magnitude more effective than conventional explosives. A nuke built specifically for space combat would probably account for this with something like Osmium bearings in the outermost layer to make a sort of nuclear frag, or shape the blast into a nuclear shaped charge or explosively formed projectile

To be clear, though, I love the mod! I mean, who doesn't love big booms?
EsotericaFerret 12 Jan, 2023 @ 5:47pm
So, I'm probably gonna get yelled at for being a nerd, but the vanilla nuke is actually pretty scientifically accurate. The most destructive part of a nuclear blast is the shockwave, which propagates through the atmosphere. With no atmosphere, it's basically just the fireball itself that does damage, so the range is much smaller and the damage is much lower.

F***ING Awesome Mod!!! Maybe make them 10x more expensive cause games just way too easy but mods too awesome to want to unsub lol. Brah, again awesome.

变化:

核爆半径+50%

核伤害+500%

在香草中,核武器是非常令人失望的,这使得核武器在保持相对平衡的同时有点有趣。

add nuclear fallout (and rad armor)

xD

It's all fun and games until the Caracara's arrive.
Richard Mc Nutbuster 15 Nov, 2022 @ 3:25am
ive personally never stopped a nuke, even with 5 pd aimed at em, id personally love slower, but more range.
Bundesnatzagentur 13 Nov, 2022 @ 6:03am
That's actually a good point. Then it would be a great addition, not replacement. Maybe you can add it as new missile type which uses more parts or something. Or maybe a different and more expensive launcher, this way it would not be so OP at the beginning of a new game. :)
Botin  [author] 12 Nov, 2022 @ 4:57am
as a single point defense can shoot down a nuke it should deal a decent amount of damage if you eventually manage to hit a ship. Most ships that aren't from the absolute beginning of the game do have point defense and are more than capable of defending themselves against all manner of missile weapons. But if more people would like a toned down version i would be happy to make one!
Bundesnatzagentur 10 Nov, 2022 @ 7:10am
I laughed really hard about the previous comment. I was thinking the same.
Kokorocodon 9 Nov, 2022 @ 4:30pm
+500% damage - Balanced.

As a suggestion you could tone down it's speed by a ton so it's not an instant game over for 4/5 of the game ship's.
