The Treasure of Atlantis - v1.2

Description
Warning : Map is performance-heavy. Avoid on low-end PCs
Golf it has a bug that cause events to behave weirdly in case of sudden framerate changes.
To reduce the risk, try to run this map in conditions that will help you having a good, consistent framerate. People who did so never had any problem with the map.
If your computer is old and/or low-end, maybe you should avoid this map, as I can't guarantee you will have a good experience. Thanks for your understanding.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Map Pitch :
Yaaar! Fellow Swashbucklers! I am looking for brave crewmates to come with me in search of great treasure! For you see, you scurvy dogs, I happen to know the secret location of ye fallen city of Atlantis! Power! Riches! Glory! According to legend, they all await us in this forsaken place!
Take ye golfing club and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime, my new mateys! Do not listen to the rumors about that supernatural guardian or those "complex triggered events" of the sunken city, whatever those are! They won't stop us in our quest for booty ! Har har har!
Set sail, my friends! For next time we come back to shore, it will be as rich men!

Features :
  • 18 holes with a medium difficulty level (and a few really easy ones)
  • Few hole in one oppotunities, but scoring eagle or better is always possible.
  • Tells a little story through "cutscenes" made with complex in-game events.
  • Don't worry, those cutscenes aren't very long (about a minute all combined)
  • Underwater sections with strong post-processing effects that create an eerie underwater ambiance (and add a little difficulty)
  • Contains a "ball steering" section. It isn't very hard but it takes places under a (pretty generous) timer. The map has text reminders of how steering works if you don't know.
  • 4 custom music tracks, and a bunch of sound effects and custom 3D to create a unique , vibrant version of Atlantis (credits below)
  • Due to the lack of better alternatives, I voiced the guardian of Atlantis. Hopefully you can bear with my accent and my lack of high end audio equipment XD
  • An ambitious project worth 70+ hours of building and testing
  • Warning : With post-processing and lots of objects, this map isn't the best for low-end machines

My Comments :

...Well, this just took 6 months!
I explained it last time and I'll say it again : since March 2022, I started drawing a pretty ambitious comic book. ...The kind that will keep me busy for a few years.
So now, not only do I play less games in general, but when I do I don't always feel like playing creative video games.
But still. Even by using level editors less often, as long as it's not zero (and it's not), then something eventually gets made. And here is a "something"!

In my own eyes and judgement, this is one of the best Golf It maps I ever made, if not the best. Not only did I make it as pretty as possible, I explored a lot of horizons I left untouched before this time : holes with secret paths, ball steering, and short automated segments that are pretty much mini cutscenes within the golf it engine! And the result turned out great! So in a way, the long production time was worth it!

I am curious to see if the public shares my opinion of this being one of my best maps.
Honestly, I kinda doubt it, because some elements of the map are going to cause strongly divide opinions : some people might just hate having mini cutscenes in a minigolf game, while others will genuinely enjoy the little story told by the map. Or similarly, others might hate my deliberate choice to use pretty heavy visual effects and lowered gravity in the underwater segments, while others will enjoy the ambiance and gameplay it provides.

...But because I clearly expect some people will hate the design choices made within this map, I think this might result in more downvotes than usual. That's my theory, at least. Might be completely wrong. Either way, I hope the people who enjoy said choices here will get a blast out of this map.

As usual, criticism and bug reports are welcome! ...if they are without gratuitous insults.
It's simple : if your comment has pointless insults and attacks against me or other people, it will be deleted. Whether it has some useful info or not. Call me a snowflake if you want, but I have better things to do with my time than trying to reason with trolls and angry people.
...Rather than waste time trying to talk with people who don't actually want to, I'd rather create more stuff. :)

Hope you have fun with the map. And for now : talley oh, mateys!

Changelog :
  • v1.1 : Modified some walls and added others to remove some frustrating "gotcha" moments. The event to "submerge" on hole 5 can now be triggered again in case a bug occured and you don't get reset underwater as you should.
Sadly, I couldn't figure out the cause of some "unexpected resets", so allowing multiple triggers of events if the best i can do so far. I'm trying to ask a few people around to figure out something...
  • v1.2 : "Doubled" some important custom events. Should mitigate the bugs caused by the game engine's poor handling of framerate drops, especially during custom events (I guess the game is still not 1.0...)

The good newsis the two Gravity Cubes are still working (still two of my favorite courses)

Yeah... seems version 1.1 has broken quite a few maps. I'll try to take a look at this soon.

I've played this before, but something broke. Probably with Golf It 1.1. Hole 14, once I jump through the large gate, everything goes gray and I can't see any course or anything. Probably the same thing that ReflectedMantis experienced. Hole 18, once I got to the end, it DNFd me (max strokes), not sure what happened there. I know I really liked it before because I gave it an 8 out of 10.

An absolute banger of a map lads

@AngstAttack : it's a fair criticism... but I also wanted the effect to be pretty strong and an obstacle. I actually want it that way and I knew this would be a controversial choice.
Maybe I will tune the effect down a little bit. But expect it to remain an hindrance : it is part of the design of the map.

Was basically unplayable with the underwater effect, visually rough - made 2 of my group's players queasy

@ReflectedMantis
Yes, sadly, the core issue here is that Golf It is a very buggy game to begin with. It seems sometimes...events just don't work.
But thanks for signaling that problem you encountered. It made me think of a possible band-aid for those problems : having several events that do the same crucial) things, so they can act as backups for one another.
Glad this problem didn't ruin your opinion of the map.

Overall, great map! I played it solo, so I have no idea what to expect it to be like playing with others, but for me, it worked well for the most part. I think the attention to detail is excellent. It's what I wish I was better at in my own maps.

I didn't experience many bugs, but there was one game-breaking one on hole 14 where, after I entered the tunnel, I became blind. I never got my vision back, and pressing both F and R didn't bring it back. I guess an event didn't get triggered when it should have? But other than that, everything seemed fine to me.

idk which one exactly it was but it's a hole where you go under water right in the beginning. all players were under water, stacked on top of each other. The player at the bottom then hit the ball, so i dropped down a little and off the path. it then spawned me back at the surface, but i wasn't able to go under water again. i kept bouncing off.

then the last hole i took the +2 opportunity and somehow landed badly. so it jumped me all the way back up through the same portal which got me +2 but ending up in the same location.

those were the two bugs i remember as of now

hope that helps!
