Roclets (Metal Bird Race)

Description
Description
This is an add-on playable race of small metal-skinned birds and the large domestic birds they raise for their shearable steel wool.
Main Features
  • Civilization: Roclet civilization with similar structure to standard Dwarf civilization.
  • Playable Race: "Roclets" which are small, steel skinned birds.
  • Creature: "Emon" birds to Roclet civilization. They are pack animals with shearable steel wool.
  • Reaction: Automatic processing of shorn steel wool into thread at Tanner's workshop.
  • Reaction: Smelting for the processed steel thread or steel cloth into steel bars at Smelter.
  • Cloth: Clothes crafted from steel cloth are significantly more durable in combat.
  • Leather: Tanned hides from the Emon or Roclets retain their steel-like material properties when crafted into armor.
  • Graphics: Complete graphics for all weapons, armor, and clothing.
  • Graphics: Roclet sprites change as they age to reflect them getting older and beginning to rust.

Instructions
This mod requires a new world to be created to take effect, so:
  1. Click "Create new world."
  2. Select your desired map size etc.
(avoid the minimum civilization option to increase chance of a surviving Roclet civ.)
  3. Enter the "Mod" menu.
  4. Put the latest version of "Roclet Mod" after the vanilla files in the load order.
  5. Create World
  6. Start a Fortress Mode game in the new world.
  7. Before clicking to zoom in, Choose origin civilization in the bottom right.
(you can zoom back out by right clicking.)
  8. Select a "Roclet" civilization that you like.
  9. Embark as normal.
(I recommend bringing a breeding pair of Emon with you as they are a great source of wealth.)

Characteristics (Flavor)
  • Very loyalty driven and family oriented. The survival of the roost is more important than any individual bird.
  • Shrewd traders that have access to the only source of steel textiles and tanned hides, which can be used to make incredibly valuable garments.
  • Share many values with the Dwarves, both being underground-dwelling and industrious, but may have occasional conflicts due to differences in cultural norms.
  • Active season is the Winter.

Quirks
  • Roclets have wings instead of arms, so they don't need (and can't wear) hand coverings.
  • Lack of arms also means that mechanically they hold everything with their feet, which I think is fun.
  • Their wing attacks use the Sword skill because I thought that was appropriate.
  • The steel skin/down layer acts like chain mail and bends, so the Roclets are vulnerable to blunt weapons despite being fairly resistant to sharp attacks.
  • This, combined with their small size and high weight means the will frequently lose fights with large creatures that wrestle (if something picks them up and shakes it's really bad).
  • Their steel skin will occasionally deflect attacks and train Armor User skill. :)
  • Emons search for vermin constantly and both they and the Roclets will kill any vermin they see.
  • The Emon wool processing has to use the Tanner's Workshop because the Loom does not accept user created recipes, and the Farmer's Workshop does not allow [AUTOMATIC] jobs.
  • Neither Roclets nor Emons have the [FLIER] tag to avoid all the 3D pathing issues that causes in fortress mode.
  • Roclets and Emons give live birth to avoid weird fortress mode behavior.
  • Roclets prize their neatly combed, smooth down when they are younger, but as they age that down begins to curl and rust.

Compatibility
This mod does not alter any vanilla raw files, so should be compatible with most other mods.

I just traded for a Emon, and am not playing Roclets. Is the job at the tanners to harvest from Emons only available for the Roclets?

Also, all my starting roclets and animals have "he/she is getting used to tragedy" in their personality. is this a bug?

I got a 7-year-old gem cutter as an immigrant. Was it a bug or do they just mature faster?

Can I use your creature graphics for a mod? I'll credit you of course.

I took out my mods one by one and created a new world, testing to see if they would craft steel cloth. i could not narrow it down to a single mod causing this behavior, but loading the roclet mod alone lets them craft steel cloth.

I'm having an issue with the roclets. They wont craft any steel cloth clothing, they will take one cloth to the clothiers shop, then the job will fail. Saying it needs "3 steel cloth" that they have, but will not bring.

@Lavender yeah i got this bug too, in my case people does't change, only part of my animals changed on random creatures from another mods, and yeah sometimes they are forgotten beasts but have too many mods so are you sure this bug hapends becauce of this mod?
Wafflcopterz 2 Oct, 2023 @ 2:28pm
@Lavender it's really tough to know when it's specific to this mod or another mod when you have a lot at the same time.

1. Can you reproduce the issue with no other mods installed?
2. Is there a specific reason you believe it's this mod's bug?
