[Genesis] Dwarves - standalone module

Description
Main Genesis mod is up now, if you want the full experience of the volume 1:
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2901564943

In preparation for a release of my "Genesis" total conversion, I am releasing a separate Dwarves-only module for others to enjoy.

There are many changes to the dwarven civilization, but not all I wanted, since without replacing all game files, the limitations do not allow me to change all I need. So this is a LITE version.

There are multiple castes with major different abilities, personality dispositions and physical characteristics.
You can determine the caste of any dwarf at glance due to my color-coding of castes with skin-hair combo, or you can check Health-Description tab of a dwarf to see more about his caste.

Some of the more exotic caste types are extremely rare.

ᚠ COMMON ᚠ

Stone clan (pink skin, brown hair)
Stone clan boyos are the most bearded mountain dwellers. Your average fuzzy-haired fool. Strong and tough and occasionally hard-working.

ᚠ UNCOMMON ᚠ

Moss clan (dark skin, moss hair)
It is said that Moss Clan dwarves can live anywhere. While it's not totally true, they can be good settlers and doctors in savage areas. They do not catch diseases as easy as other dwarves and their flesh heals at a lightning speed, making them easier to survive in location with a constant outside threat.

Shroom clan (pink skin, moss hair)
If you eat too many mushrooms and drink too much mushroom wine, your baby will be a Mushroom dwarf. They are extremely cheerful, sometimes even maniacal and crazy. They cannot learn as fast as other dwarves, but they can give births to multiple babies and they mature very fast. Their lowered vision doesn't stop them from trying to get anywhere you do not want them, just to see what's up with that place. They become great farmers though.

ᚠ RARE ᚠ

Aspid clan (moss skin, black hair)
It is not known what caused the appearance of Aspid Clan. Some say they were some cultists worshipping a great dragon god, some say they were affected by a forgotten beasts' poison. In any case, nowadays it's possible to meet dwarves which bear the mark of the snake.

Jade clan (pink skin, flax hair)
Jade Clan dwarves do not possess magical powers or unusual bodies, actually they are common dwarves. But their learning abilities make others look like idiots. They carefully pick new members of their caste and share their knowledge and secrets with them. They often take roles of nobles and scholars.

ᚠ VERY RARE ᚠ

Obsidian clan (dark skin, red hair)
Dwarves who have a spirit of ancient origin. They can control fire and magma at will, making them great furnace operators, smiths, and craftsdwarves. Fire mastery also helps in combat.

Shield clan (pink skin, black hair)
The combatant mindset of Shield Clan dwarves lets them learn the ins and outs of combat quicker than their fellows. They also like to make leather boots and mechanisms. Their legs however can never be as swift as the fastest of other castes.

Deep clan (purple skin, hairless)
It is said that deep dwarves are born to a family which was cursed by a noncorporeal being. These pale-skinned abominations are paranoid and malevolent. Their body is weaker than of a dwarf, but they cannot catch diseases. Sometimes dwarves say that deep dwarves are possessed by spirits of dead spiders. They rarely make friends and are doomed to be outcasts of the dwarven society. Deep dwarves feel they can trust stone and wood and bones.

Steel Clan (pink skin, silver hair)
Steel Clan dwarves are born to a family which was blessed by a god. They take longer to mature, but they always become great heroes, strong leaders and historians. Nobody saw a sick steel dwarf either, it looks like they just ignore any disease they encounter. Their body emanates power, and even deep wounds regenerate magically fast.

ᚠ World generation ᚠ
- Expanded biome selection for settlement placement.

ᚠ Items ᚠ
- Added more training weapons: training dagger, training hammer, training axe.
- New chain mittens.
- Forced the most important clothing pieces, so you don't end up as a civ without helmets or breastplates.
- Dwarves are allowed to wield human-sized weapons, even two-handed swords (with two hands).
- Made coins progress in 1-10-100 value instead of 1-5-10.

ᚠ Positions ᚠ
- Some entity positions can participate in espionage and partrolling (General, militia commander).
- Sheriffs and captains of the guard are chat-worthy and can be targets of kill quests.
- Expedition leader needs an office, a bedroom and a dining room.
- Mayor doesn't receive complaints (that goes to thoughtbearer/shaman/spirittalker), needs no armor racks/weapon stands and a bit less flashy rooms.
- New positions - thoughtbearer/shaman/spirittalker, can be assigned to any dwarf to listen to complaints while mayor works.
- Minor nobles need basic offices too.
- Bookkeper becomes treasurer, grand treasurer and hoardmaster as the fortress population grows.

Create a new world, during world setup select "MODS" button and enable this mod after Vanilla files.

This mod replaces the "dwarf" creature and the "mountain" entity.
The new DWARF creature is called DWARF_GENESIS to implement new graphics, the new entity is still called MOUNTAIN.

It means that this mod:
- Isn't compatible with anything that touches, replaces or modifies DWARF creature.
- Isn't compatible with anything that replaces MOUNTAIN entity (dwarven civilization).
- Is compatible with anything patching existing MOUNTAIN civilization.
- Is compatible with everything else.

Load order of tested mods that can break stuff
- Age of Man : Load "[Genesis] Dwarves" after "Age of Man", as it cuts out MOUNTAIN entity.

New training weapons are only visible in dwarven hands.
Currently you have to overwrite whole creature file or whole graphics file to make hendheld items work, and I would rather not touch humans/elves/goblins with "Dwarves" module.

- Deon for original Genesis mod.
- TomiTapio for maintaining and tweaking OldGenesis branch for years while I was away from modding.
- Dwarf Fortress developers for amazing game, and some of the graphics that I reused to recolor dwarves (dwarven sprites).

- Deon's missing Plant Graphics
- CaZsm's Squad & Burrow Icons
- See-Through Smoothing Designations
- Interface Tweaks

Hi friend, I love your mods!

love the mod, the only issue is it seems that you cant create squads to send out into the wider world for warring purposes... says "need to appoint a leader" even with the necessary military nobles sorted...

This is the only mod that's made me want to do a dwarf playthrough without CGE installed, guess I'll be saving that for my kobold save files instead. Amazing mod!

so ive been messing with intelligent undead using the castes and for some reason it seems that at least the steel and shield clan don't revive. Is this intended and do the castes keep their abilities after death.
Deon ☣  [author] 9 Jan, 2023 @ 4:27pm
It wouldn't, as the graphics overwrite each other. There's no way to make patchable graphics yet, sadly.

Gotcha, that makes sense. I appreciate the response! I'll have to make do without it then, I like the ideas of varied clans way too much to not play with this.

It's impossible to mix graphics mods at the moment, the game doesn't allow it.

Hey! I have an issue where all the dwarves appear naked despite wearing clothes. I'm using the Naut's Equipment Graphics & New Items mod which is where I imagine the conflict arises. Should I load this before or after the graphics mod in my load order?

The caste should be obvious by their skin+hair color, as mentioned in the description.

Also you can see the creature's description by looking at Health -> Description tab in game. I've put the caste names there.
