Description
This asset make possible to apply effects to particle systems.
This is no miracle though, it's a round about and non efficient way to achieve this result and it's not "plug and play" like effects for image layers.
Not perfect even in quality but it's the only way for now.

This also provides built-in opacity mask and blend modes.

If you like this rate and favorite!

Suggested usage:
  • Set background to black
  • Place the particle system as the first layer
  • Place a full composition layer as second layer and toggle off the visibility (I'll name it particle comp)
  • Place another full composition layer in the position you want the particle system to be and toggle off the visibility (I'll name it image comp)
  • Place this layer after it
  • Open the "isolate particles" effect and drag and drop the "particle comp" in the "Particles + background" texture slot
  • Open the "combine" effect and drag and drop the "image comp" in the "Background image" texture slot
  • Now you can delete the two example effects and place your own (they must be between the "isolate" and "combine" effects)

Other tips:
  • By default the effects will only be present in the limits of the particles, to change this open the "isolate" effect and disable "transparent background" or apply the effects directly in the "particle comp"
  • It's advised to use a black background for the particle layer itself but if you can't, activate HDR setting everything to 0 (if you don't want the bloom) and make sure the blending in the particle settings is "additive", then place the "particle comp" after the "image comp" and the particle layer itself between the 2, after this it's the same as above from the 6th point onward with the only addition of dragging and dropping the "image comp" in the "Background image" texture slot in the "isolate" effect.
  • It's possible to use adjustable composition layers instead of full composition layers, to do this you have to replace the layer of this asset by coping and pasting the effects, then use an adjustable comp layer for "particle comp" and "image comp". The three layers must have the same origin, scale, angles and resolution.

Awesome stuff. :coolstar2022:

There is small thing I found though. The "Particles with effects" full comp layer does not fit a 4k scene. It's moved down and a bit to the left which gives the scene a weird look because you can see a hard cut where the layer is overlapping into the camera view. I just copied the effects from your layer into an adjustable comp layer to make it dragable which fixed it and i could not get it to work with every particle systems set to refracted, but that's just a minor problem.

Nonetheless this is excellent work. Was looking for the possibility to add an opacity mask to particles for what feels like forever. Thanks. :cozybethesda::cozybrawlhalla1:

@Zauwara Thanks for pointing that out, I think I know why it happens even though the default is white. I'll push an update in the near future to make some other changes I had in mind, I should be able to fix this as well.

PS: I don't know since when, but I discovered it a year ago.

Awesome! One additional hint: At first I was confused why the effects were only applied on some regions in a checkerboard pattern. Turns out the opacity mask in the "Combine + opacity + blend modes" defaults to empty and therefore the no texture image is loaded. Easily fixed by just setting it to a white image / whatever opacity mask you actually want.

PS: Since when is it possible to drag and drop layers into texture slots? That feature is a game changer!
