Witch Trials

Description
For CK3 version: 1.16.2.3

Features

Ever have a family member or vassal turn into a witch and railed at the fact your only option to do something about it is to imprison and execute them? Well, this mod attempts to address that.

Expanded options for dealing with witches in your realm, including:

  • If witchcraft is illegal in your Faith, you may turn over an imprisoned witch (also of your Faith) to your court chaplain to be put on trial. If the witch renounces witchcraft, and the court chaplain believes their renouncement to be honest, they will lose the Witch trait and you will be given the option to set them free. Otherwise, they'll be executed... by the court chaplain, meaning it won't be a kinslaying if they're a relative.

  • You may confront a witch directly (summoning them to your court, if they're a vassal) and attempt to dissuade them from the path of witchcraft. But beware! A particularly crafty witch may be able to turn the tables on you and obtain a hook or even sway you to witchcraft as well!

  • A new game rule allowing you to optionally reduce or all but eliminate witches and witch-related content in your game, if you consider the standard options to be ahistorical.

Mod Compatibiltiy

Most of the features of this mod are designed to be self-contained, with a few exceptions:

  • The vanilla Convert to Witchcraft character interaction/scheme is overriden.
  • The vanilla Imprison character interaction is overriden.
  • The vanilla GUI file for the list of courtiers (and prisoners) is overriden.
  • A number of vanilla event files involving witch creation are included and overriden (for the new game rule).

Whether these will conflict with a mod you're using is impossible for me to say, short of looking at the files those mod uses directly, but if it affects any of the above then chances are pretty good that some kind of conflict will occur. The conflict isn't likely to break much other than the game rule, however... at least insofar as this mod goes.

Can I Incorporate This Mod Into My Own?

If you like, certainly. Just give me credit somewhere.

I have translated your mod into German (AI assisted) and added the localization to my translation mod: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3355568022

Of course, you can extract the files and add them to your own mod, or include a link to the mod in your description — or do neither. As you wish!

@ᚬᛏᛁᚾ I doubt it, as they pretty much do opposite things - and Witchcraft has its own version of witch trials - but, in terms of direct conflict I don't think there's much.

@hamletsdead This mod is centered around providing tools for limiting/eliminating witchcraft... so, no, no plans for expanding the content for actually being a witch.

Is this compatible with witchcraft?

Cool idea, thanks for the mod and kudos for the work. Any plans to add content for when you are actually playing as a witch and coven master? E.g., events where have to avoid close scrutiny if your realm religion hates witches or where you bluster and deny your involvement or intimidate the accusers. Sort of like the royal court scene where you get accused of being a demon, which I always love to embrace while playing as a demon.

New version is up.

@macluk I wasn't going to remove the GUI change, as I needed that to include the icons which allowed you to put a witch prisoner on trial or to confront them, but it changed enough in the new patch that I thought it best to remove it anyhow. Those things can still be accessed from the character interaction menu.

Can we safely remove the giu for courtier list? i think it's conflicting with other mods so it would be useful to get rid of it, unless you could add a screenshot of what it changes.

Dear author, there is a program ModTranslationHelper on GitHub. With its help, you can automatically create localization files for your mod from your native language to other languages supported by the game in a couple of clicks. Perhaps you will find this useful. The idea of the mod is cool.
