Description
Blood Sugar mod

*** DEVELOPMENT AND PENDING REWRITE ON HOLD AWAITING Build 42 ***
*** THIS IS A WORK-IN-PROGRESS! ***
*** Use at your own discretion! ***
*** Tested in MP, but YMMV! ***

Update, 31st dec 2023
Seeing as this mod has gained some traction, and there are many issues such as, but not limited to:
  • Client/server-code is not placed/loaded properly, causing server to kill players because of low BS when their BS is totally fine. This can effectively tank a player's MP experience as they *will* die almost instantly after spawning. Only fix is to remove mod from server. A fix has already been made, but not distributed.
  • Compatability with other mods. I might abandon the idea of adding compatability with other mods, as there are just a myriad of food/drink items that need to be added. Getting RL glycemic-index numbers for all of these food-items is very labour intensive, and I don't see myself spending literal days doing this. I'll play with the idea of making an adapter so that other mods can add compatability with the BS-mod, which is more intuitive.
  • Various other jank which negatively affect gameplay with this mod installed.

Considering this mod was made as an inside joke/novelty, it's been wounderful to see how many people appreciate it.
I will refactor the mod and release a new version of it as soon as I have time, hopefully during january 2024.

Some wounderful people has asked if they could contribute, and I truly appreciate any help I could delegate in order to make this mod better, specifically if anyone has experience with creating custom GUI-elements in a Zomboid-mod as documentation is very limited.

Summary
This mod tries to model blood sugar levels for players.
Levels are very manageable for non-diabetic players (see traits), but low blood sugar is a risk if you neglect to eat and drain your blood sugar too fast (see features).

Traits
Diabetes type I
With no ability to produce insulin, you're fully at the mercy of injectable insulin.
You have to either avoid/minimize consuming carbohydrates and relying on exercise in order to decrease your blood sugar levels, or find some insulin!

Diabetes type II
Can be managed with a low-carb diet, but you should be mindful of your food choices.

Lootable items
Syringe
Needed in order to inject insulin.

Insulin
It's insulin, plain and simple. CHO ratio of 1:15.

Test strips for glucose monitor
Needed in order to measure blood sugar levels with a glucose monitor.

Reusable lancet
A device used to puncture the skin in order to draw blood for blood sugar measurements.

Glucose monitor
A device that accurately measures blood sugar levels of the user.
In order to use the device, you need a reusable lancet and test strips in your inventory.

Main features
  • Food items (base-game) now have a glycemic index assigned to them. This enables the player to check the real-life glycemic index in order to calculate needed insulin before/after a meal.
  • Checking blood sugar with glucose monitor. I hope to add a visual element to represent the glucose monitor sometime in the future, but for now, the player with simply say the results (using DebugSay, to zombs shouldn't hear you).
  • Checking blood sugar in a less traditional way... By tasting your own urine! Just right-click an empty water- or pop-bottle, take a leak and a sip! Your character will not enjoy this, but you get an indication of your blood sugar levels.
  • Adverse effects (and eventually death) if blood sugar gets too high or low.
  • Activities such as walking, running, exercising lowers your blood sugar at different rates.

Additional information
At the moment, mod-items only spawn on zombs, and in certain bags (Trauma bag *hint hint*).
This will be adjusted as soon I as get the time to learn how the proc-tables works in regard to loot distribution.

There are some unique effects to low blood sugar, though they are subject to change.
Low blood sugar is deadlier than high, but both *will* kill you.

Try researching diabetes for more information on how to dose insulin according to the amount of carbohydrates and glycemic index of a particular food item.

At the moment, both insulin and blood sugar follow a simple increase/decrease over 120 ingame minutes. This is subject to change, with possibly adding different types of insulin in the future (slow- and fast-acting).

I probably forgot something, but I'll revise this information soon enough.

Bugs and feedback
If you find any bugs (I'm sure there'll be some), or have any feedback, be sure to leave a comment!

Cheers, and good luck!

So I broke into a pharmacy, but none of the containers or zeds had any insulin or even needles. What the fuck? I spent like two days kiting the hoards away from the pharmacy, but literally none of the mod items are in there. I don't know if this is an oversight or a bug, but I'd imagine medical centers would have at least some insulin and needles.

So, any plans for an update? And I guess it would be impossible to ask for an european measurement? had to look for the equivalence in sugar in blood measurement americans use.
