A New Sensible Family 3

Description

For CK3 1.16.2.3
Tired of starting off an orphaned, only-child without any recollection of who your parents once were? Wouldn't you like some company as you begin your world-conquering? Maybe an older sister? A bastard baby half-brother? A spouse and even a child? Heck, who wants to start a medieval intrigue game without a mother?!

What does it do?
ANSF3 adds in a Reflect on Your Family decision which, by default, can be taken by the player character in the first game year and only once per dynasty (a game rule exists to relax both these restrictions, should you desire).

It starts an event chain which will allow you to first create a father, then a mother, and after that to optionally add siblings, half-siblings, a spouse, and even children (including bastard children). It works around existing family members, should any exist, and will attempt to make them all work logically, and will even take into account a character you created with the bastard trait.

Additional Features:
  • You can customize each created family member, including their name, age, and many of their traits including education, personality, lifestyle, genetic, and others. These are done through a custom interface, and it will attempt to apply everything logically - including adjustments for children, twins, bastards, etc.

  • Family members (other than siblings and children) can potentially be connected to an existing dynasty. The system looks for existing ruler of that character's culture and religion who can be a sibling or parent to that character and attempts to fit them into the family in a logical manner.

  • If your player character has no family at all, you can also connect them to an existing dynasty or use other options like being a peasant leader, or having come from lowborn stock and a peasant leader father.

  • There are Create Family and Create Random Family character interactions included which allow you to use family creation on appropriate (rulers and courtiers below age 50) non-player characters. These interactions have a game rule which governs them separately, and they can be disabled if you wish.

Limitations
  • If you want your generated father (or mother, which would put her in a matrilineal marriage) to be your dynasty, you have to join his (and are free to edit it afterwards, as normal) - he can't join yours. This is an engine limitation, as otherwise it messes with the dynasty view. If you don't, any generated siblings will be his dynasty, not yours.

  • If you create a very masculine-looking character, female family members who draw their appearance from you might end up quite masculine-looking, as well, though unless they're a twin they'll adjust their appearance slightly so they're not a clone.

  • If your character has an administrative family title and estate, added in 1.13, you won't be able to change your dynasty. If you link yourself to an existing dynasty, it'll be as a bastard founder.

  • Generated character birthdates are random (including twins) and can't be changed.

FAQs
  1. Is this compatible with X mod?

Normally, yes. Any mod that deletes certain vanilla traits which ANSF3 looks for can cause a crash when trying to edit some categories of traits for created family members - this is common with total conversion mods. I've done some compatibility work with AGOT (A Game of Throne) so it won't crash there, but be aware it also won't take advantage of all AGOT's new traits either.

You can ask if a mod is compatible or not, but I'm not always going to download and check other mods for you. Best way to find out is to test it yourself.

  2. Can this be used in multiplayer?

    Yes.

  3. Is this save game compatible?

Yes, but if the default game rules are used, the decision won't be available after the first game year. You can use the Gamerule Gadget mod to adjust game rules after game start.

  4. Will you add more family member options, like grandparents, aunts, nephews, and cousins?

All of that is possible (to a point, as you can't create anyone who died in the past), but goes beyond the scope of the mod as originally envisioned. This is meant to be a starting point of your dynasty, to give you some kind of origin story for custom or ahistorical characters.

  5. Can I integrate this mod into my own?

Absolutely, and feel free to change it in your mod however you wish. Just provide credit where it's due.

Credits
Speaking of credit:

Big shout out to Olympia, who created A New Sensible Family 2. I originally used that as the base for inclusion in Love Marriage Family, and expanded on it considerably from there. Eventually, some users asked if I could also include it as its own separate sub-mod, which is why ASNF3 came to be.

Olympia has given their blessing for this continuance of their work, which I appreciate a great deal.

@Burndead No idea. VIET and EPE should be OK? Otherwise, look to the FAQ just above, in the description.

IS this compatible with more bookmars epe, cfa, viet, CE?

@c✓z Not unless I make some kind of list of said dynasties or characters. Right now, the code grabs any appropriate characters and adds them to the list, and there are only so many ways to dynamically do so (especially among dead characters).

Will it be possible to later allow player characters to claim to be descendants of ancient bloodlines, as well as being the posthumous children of some dead characters, or being the heirs of some non-independent rulers, or rulers of some other cultural characters? I think the scope of paternity can be wider, just like those historical claimants.

@scottytsr Depends on what you've set the gamerules to. By default, the decision disappears after the first game year, and you can't get it back... not without using another mod like, say, Gamerule Gadget and changing the ANSF3 gamerule settings.

Hey is there a event to trigger the decisions? I forgot to hit it and its not there now lol
scottytsr 11 Jul @ 6:42pm
damn, too bad. Thanks for getting back to me

@scottytsr There's no way I could save any information that would be accessible outside of a save, I'm afraid. So, as soon as you've started a new game, it'd be lost.

I know this is random, but I love this mod so here goes. Any chance that you could add a new feature that saves your family? Maybe have a pre-set 1-5. This way you can start a new game and click 1, boom they younger twin vying for title, 3 sisters, the bastard brother and both parents just pop up, then I can edit. Not sure how hard that would be since I have NOOOOO idea how to code/mod

@Diego There's an FAQ about linking to dynasties in the discussion threads.
