Hundred Years War: Rise of the Black Prince (1337-1356 AD)

Description
On the field of the Battle of Crecy in 1346 A.D., a sixteen year-old Edward, the Black Prince, personally led England to victory over France and Bohemia.

At one point the tide turned ill against the young man. King Edward III`s advisors pled with him:

`Your Majesty, Prince Edward`s line is failtering to the French cavalry. We need to get him out!`

King Edward III: `Is he still alive?`

`Yes`

King Edward III: `Let the boy fight! Allow him this day to win his spurs, for if God be pleased, I would like this victory be his, and the honor thereof...`

Well met again, Friends! "The Hundred Years of War – Rise of the Black Prince" is a scenario depicting the first part of that prolonged, dynastic fight for the crown of France. These wars were fought between the Kingdoms of England and France, along with a various and rotating set of allies.

This mod is an update of an earlier scenario of mine of a similar name. But….

This scenario is DIFFERENT!!!

Most scenarios are simply Civ5 playing its normal 6000 year game plan to win a culture victory, but on a smaller map covering a shorter time-frame. Civs don't act like they're in an existential struggle.

This mod is the first installment of a scenario built around the “MERLIN Scenario Engine.” It is a library of code that provides a great number of changes to Civ5 AI behavior so that AI civs are now focused, well-bonused and very hard to beat.

MERLIN is designed to change core Civ5 behavior so that AI civs now fight a death-match, clawing to survive, focused on victory over a handful of years, not millennia.

To learn more about Merlin, check out the link below.

This scenario contains 7 playable civs, with 10 supporing City States:
- Kingdom of England
- Kingdom of France
- Duchy of Burgundy
- Duchy of Brittany
- County of Flanders
- Holy Roman Empire
- Papal States

The Kings of England and France must raise support of the noble families who hold sway over most of France. The main struggle of the times is between these two kingdoms. However, other nations on the border of France could considerably influence the outcome of this struggle. The Burgundians and Bretons will fight strongly to maintain their relative freedom from the French crown. The Empire is always looking for new lands to add to their holdings. The Papal States simply want to survive and maintain the influence of the Holy Church.

Due to the feudal manner in which societies were organized, sovereigns were forced to rely on subordinate nobles to raise armies, collect taxes, and keep the peace. This scenario implements this dynamic by using Fiefdoms (aka City States), which must be influenced, bullied, or even conquered, in order to get them to comply with royal instruction.

TLDR;
- Seven playable civs: England, France, Burgundy, Brittany, Flanders, Holy Roman Empire, and the Papal States

- Tri-monthly turns, 1337 - 1356 AD, 80 turns max; Timed and Domination victories only

- Player Civs start in the Medieval Era

- New Units: There are 77 reskinned units, 28 Magnate units, 6 Mercenary units

- New Buildings: Each playable civ has 2 new buildings; there are 10 new buildings available to all civs

- Holy Roman Empire can use “Diplomatic Intrigue,” aka Diplomatic Marriage, to acquire city states

- Most units available earlier on the tech tree than the standard game

- Research takes longer; constructing buildings and units not so much

- Magnates, or super Great Generals, are available to all Civs

Recommended Mods: “Quick Turns” by Krzyzyk, as the AI tends to produce large numbers of units.

Note:: Since this mod adjusts so many Civ5 settings, there's a really good chance it will not play well with other mods. Add other mods slowly to see which one do and do not work with it

Acknowledgements: Apologies in advance - if I've missed someone who should be here, please send me a note and I'll update at once.

Initial thanks to my collaborators – who’ve helped me greatly in collecting artwork, testing, and improving the design of the scenario: Sebastien1976, Canute_1000, and KryptonianEmperor.

Additionally, this mod is completely built around showing off the great unit models of zwei833, nutty, and bernie14. The rest of the mod is built as a stage for these models to trod upon.

As a starter, here's a list of great modders who have helped me get this far: Kael (as the UR modder, the hero who started this all), Le Sage/Antiscamp (the Vanilla MOD that motivated me to build this one!), whoward69 (name it, helped with everything), LeeS (again, across the board help), Gedemon (everything), Nutty (helped with everything), thecrazyscotsman (units/buildings/making mods that made me like the game in the first place), PawelS (Overall solid advice, constantly providing assistance), JFD (across the board help, artwork, civ kickstarters), janboruta (fantastic artwork), Troffelshriek/Endlessbug (general assistance), Meziane (France kick start), Hiram (various civ kick starts), Pouakai / MS / TheTopCat84 (various civ kick starts), Danrell / bernie14 / zwei833 / wolfdog / Deliverator / Jaythekiller / Nomad_or_What / ispanets / Murphy613 / Civitar / XarsusKwadjh (units), Delnar_Eriske (Artificial Unintelligence/AI improvements), Iceco (city state improvements), Hinin (French unit name improvements), Zappara (general guidance), lasmal (playtesting/game design), juliendesprairies (French improvements).

why do modmakers do this stupid thing where they localise every factions units... i only speak english, so i chose to run the game in english, and yet i have to play with 'kampasyte bagskytters' and 'riddare' as my units... it sounds so dumb and tells me absolutely nothing about what the unit does because i dont speak burgundian. literally what is the benefit of this?

The second scenario is completed. It covers the Hundred Years War from 1415 - 1453:

https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3099740977

It also has an accompanying Civ Pack, containing the 5 civs from the scenario, plus 6 other civs from about the same time-frame:

The mod was constructed in a way where it could be possible to play in multiplayer - using some kind of hack like these:

Multiplayer Mods Workaround (https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=361391109)

Or:

MPPatch (https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/mppatch-easy-modded-multiplayer.617806/) .

I will say, however, this mod makes so many changes to Civ5 it will be highly likely to be incompatible with a lot of other mods.

So even if you get it up and running in MP, you really shouldn't combine this mod with many others.

I noticed that it says multiplayer is yes for this mod, how does that work and/or what does that mean?

One of my collaborators (Sebastien1976) is 100% responsible for finding the artwork. I'm completely terrible at things like that.

I really like that there's a wide-variety of quality artwork with a consistent artstyle - really helps improve the immersive qualities of the mod.

Nice use of CK3 stills. I'm glad I'm not the only modder to have brought those visages into civ.

This mod has all the functionality of Black Swan. I will update Black Swan soon, based on the events in this mod.
