S.O.G. Prairie Fire: Whispers in the Tall Gra

Description
May, 1968. RT Knife is tasked with conducting a wire-tap operation deep behind enemy lines in Cambodia.

Features:

- Play as a MACV SOG One-Zero in this singleplayer scenario and lead RT Knife on a dangerous mission across the fence in Cambodia, inspired by the real-world unit and their missions during the Vietnam War.

- Uses the amazing S.O.G. Prairie Fire CDLC and its groundbreaking modules, allowing for dynamically spawned patrols, trackers and reinforcements for hours of replayability.

- Need close air support or a helicopter extraction from a hot LZ? Use the S.O.G. Prairie Fire Radio Support system and the ARMA III Helicopter Transport Support system to get the support you need!

- Optional AI Revive script by pierremgi available.

- Features a Remain Overnight (RON) sequence, with scripts provided by veteran29 (Filip).

- Uses gear from Recon Team Blackfoot (RTBF), which adds more quality equipment to your Recon Team.

- Use earplugs while on board the helicopters to protect your hearing and enjoy some great music, both courtesy of the S.O.G. Prairie Fire CDLC!

- Explore FOB-5 Ban Me Thout, home of SOG's Command and Control South, in a detailed base with editor placed objects and units. Talk to fellow recon men, S-4, dispensary medic, modify your team loadouts, and more!

- Mission is made with the intent of using the amazing SOG AI mod by Johnnyboy. SOG AI is the way to play MACV SOG missions!

- Mission is named after the legendary second book written by MACV SOG CCN Recon Man Richard 'Nick' Brokhausen, a legend in the US Special Operations Community.

- Also, for players of the old gold game, Vietcong, you'll find that RT Knife is made up of some familiar characters...

Notes:

- Do take the time to read the mission tips and notes, and also to read the tasks and hints as they appear throughout the mission. These will all tell you what you will need to do to ensure the mission runs the way it's supposed to run. I have included colored Action Menu options to ensure you click the correct option. This is extremely important for the use of the 414 Wire-Tap Set in the mission.

Credits:

- H34dup, for all his invaluable lessons in mission making. He's been giving me advice in mission editing since ARMA II, and has always allowed me to dissect his awesome missions to learn how he made them. He's pretty much an Eden Editor God at this point!

- Savage Game Design for the best CDLC to release for ARMA III, and the best Vietnam War game to ever come to PC.

- Bohemia Interactive Studios for the amazing MILSIM franchise we all love!

- Recon Team Blackfoot (RTBF) for their amazing RTBF Gear mod, which complements S.O.G. Prairie Fire very well.

- pierremgi for the amazing AI Revive script.

- veteran29 (Filip) for providing me the cool scripts to create the RON sequence in the mission!

- Murklor for his ARMA II AI Cache and Spawn script, updated for ARMA III.

would like to say, truly thank you Lazy for sinking in the fucking weeks probably months of tinkering in making these works of art, appreciate the fuck outta u dawg

lazy, i think u need to change u're name since there was NOTHING LAZY ABOUT THIS FUCKING BANGER!!

It was one of the most challenging, fun, pucker-inducing jungle-safari surfing SOG mission i have ever played. I was immersed from touchdown to dustoff , bravo lazy for recreating Whispers in the Tall grass to a fucking T

NOTES:
-I do think the trackers were a bit too overbearing since i had patrols at the objectives too. But if that was u're true intention so let it be it.
-I think having them manned was a bit hard

At the end it was just me and Hien my 1-4, RIP to rest of RT Knife

I saw your comment on HeadUp's "Over the Top" mission so I checked out your stuff, pretty good so far. I like how you named them S.O.G similar to the spelling of HeadUp's missions so that your missions stay in the same area as his, and kept the mission artwork similar to his style. I'd say reach out to him, you two would do good work together. he really needs to update his missions to be co-op tho :(

nicely made mission, ambiance between the"trees are talking asian dudes" and "get cooked, gook!". ah, the 1970s, awesome retro to a grand era featuring shooting commies and smelling napalms

@CaptnPicard1, thanks for trying my missions, and I hope this one went well for you.

@mason77, thank you for trying the mission. I have tried to find a balance for the trackers without making the mission too quiet and thus, too easy. I was able to sneak my whole team past a number of trackers, and also keep them off my tail with toe poppers, but I made the mission, so I'm not a good gauge. I understand what you are trying to say. As an ardent enthusiast of MACV SOG, I know the enemy contact might be a bit extreme for some, but to keep the mission fun and exciting, yet realistic, it is how it is. I also wouldn't have made this a Hatchet Force mission as I don't believe SOG ever fielded a Hatchet Force for a wire tap mission. I hope you enjoyed the mission, nonetheless!

@XSDNAX thank you, and I hope you enjoyed the mission.

Great mission, I haven't finished yet but so far love the atmosphere and attention to S.O.G. detail. Seems like you put some time and effort in and I appreciate it. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for your effort! The briefing is top notch, cool dialogs in the camp too, the mission idea is great. But don't you think there are too many trackers? I mean I thought it would be a recon mission and this is a game which needs a serious balance to achieve that. Instead, we were detected upon landing every time and it was a firefight every step of the way. I tried being as stealthy as possible but no help, they just zero in on us.

Just a suggestion nothing else. I'd say a proper Hatchet style mission is better for a massive firefight like this. In reality a recon op would be cancelled if the team gets compromised.

Dear author - I just wanted to thank you a HUGE bunch for creating these vietnam era SOG style missions. I am a late comer to ArmA 3 (didn't really do it for me) but I really like the vietnam mod. The single player / story side of things are a little short, so it's great someone like yourself is helping fill that gap.

I've read at least 20 memoirs from Vietnam vets, from pilots to pointmen, SOG and junior Lt's to the regular grunt. Spoken with a couple online, and there's something that fascinates me about this specific conflict. Not so much the action, but the human factors, the pain, anxiety and suffering, but also the comradeship, forging bonds more powerful than family in many cases. As one guy put it, "the ultimate hunt, where the game shoots back"

Thanks again. I look forward to playing these.

@TheLazyDugong31 I will try again, knowing this, cheers!
Dugong31  [author] 4 Dec, 2023 @ 2:47pm
Hi @Wolfwitz. Thanks for trying the mission. I'm almost certain if the recorder was not picked up at the S4 shop via the red highlighted option, it will break the mission to some degree. Based on how I scripted the mission, picking up the wire-tap via the usual inventory way at S4 will likely fire the "pick up recorder" trigger at the wire-tap site, since the trigger to complete the wire-tap site objective checks for a recorder in the player's inventory.

But I'm also quite sure that if you planted the recorder at the wire-tap site via the red highlighted option when it comes up, a recorder should still spawn somewhere close to you on the ground. Maybe it is in a bush and is out of sight.

Hope your next run of the mission allows you to complete it to the end!
