As part of the Vigil Series, the MEI is a small craft interceptor designed to combat the space fighters often deployed by Sol when they send carriers. While rare, the threat the enemy fighters pose can cause damage if left alone despite not being equipped with heavy ordinance. Their numbers being the worst they offer.

Equipped with considerable forward and vertical thrust, the Gen 5 is a VTOL ground to space capable fighter frame that allows AUC pilots to engage enemies regardless of the environment. A menace to enemy forces that outpace even the Gen 4 fighter craft. 6 fixed autocannons, 3 fixed gatlins, and 4 fixed rocket pods allows the MEI to deliver notable damage even to large craft and have been instrumental at not only fending off small craft, but even disabling large ships by flanking and destroying the forward thrusters.

Seating one, the small size allows AUC carriers to hold no less than 20 if needed. Most Gen 5 cruisers also have a built in docking point for one as an escort.

While not the most robust design, the encased design iconic of the AUC fighter craft is a recognizable and telling feature that persists even today. Sophisticated camera/radar technology allows the pilot to operate the craft as if they see the void of space in front of them.

The design of the MEI was actually a last minute decision. While the previous Gen 4 Vulture and Reaper were popular models that still enjoy employ of the AUC today, the Gen 5 outpaces both models and even has a heavy strike variant that sports a lower mounted rail gun for targeted strikes against large grid enemy vessels. Though few in number, those are kept in reserve or deployed with one in a squadron if needed.

The ease of production of the Gen 5 MEI allows production facilities to put out new units numbering several per day with minimal personnel. The automation of the process shouldering much of the burden. Since being deployed, the Sol invasion efforts, which were already failing, saw even worse casualties as the MEI incurred devastating losses on their own small craft and even large ships. Presently, the Gen 5 MEI are swiftly replacing any lost or outdated Gen 4 fighters that need service. The older models being drawn into the inner system and used to bolster existing patrol fleets.
