Click Here For The B42 Update

Please note that because of the release of B42, this is the LESS up-to-date version of this mod. I may back-port as time (and sanity) allows, but for all of the latest items and updates, please visit the page above.

PALSJ's Poofs
This is a hair mod for Project Zomboid that hopes to focus on curly hair textures and styles, especially those utilized by African Americans and other members of the African diaspora, while maintaining the low-ish poly Project Zomboid style. While you (or your character) do not have to be black to use this mod, the specific goal here is to empower Africana folks to create characters that look like themselves and their communities.

Current Hairstyles
All hairstyles have support for the male and female model as well as hat support, regardless of the name or implied 'gender' of the style. Hair is not gendered--so rock whatever style you like!

Please feel free to suggest names for styles that do not have a cute name!

In This Update... (June 2025)
  • Added Storm, Storm (Tied), and Storm (Short)
  • Hat support WIP. You know the drill.
  • Changed the "attached" state of hairs to more accurately reflect whether or not they are actually "attached" (aka 'tied.'). Any loc'd or braided styles are considered 'tied' while any natural styles are not, unless they like. Literally are. Anyway--I'm gonna live my hair braiding RP dreams. You should too!

Known Bugs & Upcoming Fixes
  • Uhhhh general clipping and ongoing hat support. Y'know.

This mod should be compatible with everything as it only adds models and does not otherwise modify any existing content.

If there are any bugs not listed here, please use the discussions section to let me know! I will do my best to fix them. You can also check the change log to see when the mod was last updated, what was fixed and/or added, and what is planned for the next update!

FAQ
Can you do (insert hairstyle)?
Maybe. I intend to add more natural hair styles and masculine styles. I likely won't be trying any straight hairstyles as a) that's not the point of this mod and b) honestly...it seems harder. Haha!

I have a request or I want to support you in making this mod.
Cool. Any requests can go in the comments, and if anyone wants to support, please feel free to reach out. I'm @PALSJ on Discord. If you are interested in tipping, my Ko-fi is linked below. Comments always make me smile--so please feel free to leave those too! :)

Can I put this mod into a mod pack?
No, and I wouldn't encourage you to do so anyway. I want folks to have access to the most up to date version of this mod, which may happen at any time...subject to my life/schedule. I'm not a tech-y person and my job doesn't often have me in front of a computer--All of these efforts happen in my downtime, but I'm also a friend, daughter, sister, and painfully human! <3 Self care is what keeps me modding, but it unfortunately means that my updates are inconsistent at best.

TLDR, I don't want folks having an out-of-date experience, and while mod packs are convenient for users, they're inconvenient for creators when it comes to updates. Please do not put this mod into a mod pack.

Not all black people have curly hair, and not all curly haired people are black.
Both very true statements! Regardless of those facts, there are very few hairstyles that accurately represent the tighter-coiled textures African American folks (such as myself) often have. Even in the modding scene, there is only one mod that I would say accurately depicts a texture like my own--and while that mod does a great job--it nonetheless provides a total of two (very nicely done) hairstyles. I simply want to provide more! Nothing more, nothing less.

These look like they were done by someone who barely knows how to use Blender or mod for Project Zomboid. I could do better.
That's because...they were! I learned Blender in about two weeks (at the time I published this mod), and I still struggle with the PZ/coding side of things. If you can do better, I not only invite you to--I DARE you to.

Like...Please. Please do.

Like what I do? Want updates faster? Want to request something specific (and pay me to do it)? Visit my Ko-fi[ko-fi.com] to make it rain on my miserable existence.

@Choko The hair guide is still helpful for blender, but the file structure for B42 is a little different! I'd reach out to folks in the PZ modding discord or in the modding section of the PZ discord

Hi! I saw that you guided yourself with the hairstyle editing guide for these mods. Is that guide still valid for build 42? I'm wanting to make a wolf cut hairstyle and I've never touched blender. I saw that you started with that guide! Could you point me in the right direction to make my own hairstyles? Thanks!

Oh awesome, thank you! I appreciate it. I tried to add you but it says you have to add me first - my tag is jaybird_

@felonius gru Reach out to me on Discord! I can point you to the modding discord and/or offer some tips. I'm a bit rusty/out of the scene tbh, so I may not be the best resource, but I can certainly try to help. :)

Hello! I really love this mod. I'm currently getting into PZ modding myself, specifically hairstyles and was wondering if you'd be able to point me in the right direction? I understand if not, I just really like the style of these hairs (pun intended) and was hoping to get a bit of a better understanding of the workflow behind it. Thanks :)

Updated for B42 here to avoid disrupting the experience of folks still playing B41 (especially MP servers):

Oh, well that's completely fine with me. you've already been carrying the Afro-zomboid community on your back and I thank you HEAVILY for that!

@Takirii Thank you for the suggestions! I'm not sure I'll be adding anything anytime soon, just for the record. While I intend to update for B42, my motivation for working on many projects is kind of at a low right now.
