Containment Breached | An Endless H2 Floodwar

“During the battle of Installation 05, the Covenant dispatched a military unit with an intent of drawing the Flood away from the Arbiter and Tartarus as they retrieved the index. The Flood are hell bent on consuming these Covenant invaders. Choose your alliance and join your fellow troops in battle!”

*Mod updated to be compatible and functional with the Halo MCC patch released on February 28th, 2025.*

I developed this mod to emulate the combat design of the campaign level Quarantine Zone. This was a mission that always fascinated me, and I always wanted the large scale Covenant vs. Flood sections to last longer. This map also draws some inspiration from a mod made back in the H2 Xbox days. It was called “AI War”, and was one of the maps included in the AI Revision Mod Pack back in June 2007. Originally, the mod featured UNSC vs Covenant forces, and included AI vehicles as well. I decided to re-do some things with my own ideas, and made the level Covenant vs. Flood. If you have played the original - I think you will love my version!


Map Features:
  • An endless AI war that lasts as long as your session goes.
  • Pathfinding everywhere.
  • *NEW* Spectator tools accessible with the Acrophobia skull. Perfect for players that like to sit back and watch the AI do battle.
  • Placed respawning weapons and powerups at each of the bases.
  • Placed empty vehicles at each base that respawn.
  • Faction appropriate scenery at each base.
  • Custom code that rewards players checkpoints occasionally, so death doesn’t reset you back to the beginning.
  • Many types of AI that spawn for each side at assorted intervals with lots of variations and classes, all chosen at random so no two fights are the same.
  • AI controlled vehicles that are spawned for each side. They are endlessly respawned just like all ground forces.
  • Careful control over the total AI on map so the game engine is not overloaded.
  • Play as an Elite General on the Covenant side, and an infected Spartan on the Flood side.

How to Install and Play:

After subscribing to this project and letting the download complete, launch the MCC with anti-cheat disabled. Navigate to campaign, then Halo 2: Anniversary, and in that menu there should be an option that has appeared called "Containment Breached | Endless AI War". Click on that option, and in the next menu select “missions”. There are two missions included in the mod. Both are identical maps, with the only difference being the side you are allied with, and the character you play as. To play as the Covenant, select the “Covenant” option. To play as the Flood against the Covenant forces, choose the “Flood” option. The experience is highly customizable with players being able to choose the game difficulty, as well as which Skulls are active for the session. All of the Skulls are fully functional, just like in the campaign. After selecting your options, launch the level and have a blast!


New Spectator Tools:

I have received requests in the past from players that wanted the mod to be more spectator friendly. I have implemented a switch that you can toggle that sets all AI to be friendly to the player, but not the opposing faction. Now you can watch the fight without any worry of being singled out and fired upon. Please see the guide thread to learn how to use these functions.

Just a quick PSA for all Containment Breached fans - I have just updated this map to be compatible with the MCC patch released yesterday. Everything should be fully functional just as it was before the patch. If you encounter any bugs I may have missed by mistake, please don't hesitate to let me know! Be advised - previously saved checkpoints you may have will no longer exist and you will need to start the map from the beginning. Enjoy and thank you for your patience!

I think I can make that idea happen! I love the dynamics of those battles too. In the meantime, you can check out the Mausoleum AI Battle made by ferginator. It is very fun and I definitely approve of it!

I did! I played on this map for 2 hours. I wish I knew how to mod, if I did I would make a battle with Elites, Grunts and Hunters on one side an Brutes, Jackels and Drones on the other. My favorite level on Halo 2 was the Uprising level where you take revenge on the Brutes for there betrayal.

Sounds like you had a good time! A cool aspect I put into my mods is randomness behind which AI spawn in and the gear they arrive with. There’s so many possibilities which makes my AI maps very replayable!

Had a really good battle on this map yesterday. I played it on normal difficulty and sided with the Covenant, the Elite Ultra survived for 30 minutes and was cutting down loads of Flood, but unfortunately a Grunt ally hit him with a ghost and lowered his shields and then the Flood finished him off.

@Pramevil Interesting. I've personally never that happen to me but I will investigate and see if I can reproduce that bug on my end.

I just downloaded this and played as the covenant, after about 20mins, i noticed brute allies were turning into half flood forms (but remained as allies) and then all the flood enemies were appearing as allies on the motion sensor as well as aim (green).

The mongoose is a cut vehicle from Halo 2 so it's not finished and therefore doesn't exactly look professional. Nothing to do with you.

However Spartans don't have animations for driving it so you'll need to give them the ghost animations in order for them to use it.

@element Thanks for playing. I can certainly see more weapons being added in when I do updates in the near future. The mongoose is not my asset so that one I won’t be able to solve.

Hey nice mod! Have you thought in adding more weapons to the sandbox? Would be great having more weapon variety, also the mongoose tires don't spin..
