Tracking Beacons

Description
Adds tracking beacons to the game, which can be used to keep track of the location of objects and creatures even as they move around the world.

Source: https://github.com/kernelmethod/QudMods/tree/main/TrackingBeacons

New items

This mod adds the magnetic tracking beacon item to the game, which can be attached to any metal creature or object.

It also adds the tracking beacon injector item, which can be injected into organic creatures or objects.

The location of an object with an attached tracker will continue to be tracked even if the object gets sucked into a space-time vortex or is otherwise lost.

Beacons can be applied to targets (with their consent) or forcibly by equipping them into your main hand. Beacons are destroyed by electromagnetic pulses.

Would love a version that acts as an item mod, so I can keep track of, say, my Portable House

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I’ll be busy with work for the next few weeks but I’ll try to pin down this bug as soon as I have some time. Journal notes for beacons definitely shouldn’t be clearing other journal notes

I think I've run into a bug! I use Journal notes to bookmark (so to speak) the parasangs all around the Six Day Stilt by which vendors are where. So when I move to that tile on the map, I typically have around nine locations marked, including current location and arrival location.

When I injected three of my clones with tracking beacons, going to that tile on the map showed three of my bookmarks erased. When I moved to those maps and clicked "add entry" in the journal, I got a CTD.

I suppose it's an edge case, but man I really came to depend on those SDS bookmarks. And I'd imagine a tile that's been delved deeply into, such that numerous dromad merchants / teleport gates / baetyls were found, might have the same issue.

After playing with this mod in 2 games I have to say the balance is well done and currently the best solution to the "having your companion one-shotted by a spacetime vortex to be gone forever" problem. I think there are other ways it could be and should be addressed but this mod fits the bill for now.

Finally I can play as the government and inject people with tracking chips

I also would love if you didn't have to attach it to something. I think supporting being able to throw it through a portal to see where it leads is in the spirit of simulation fun. I can see someone thinking this is OP, though you could institute something for balance. Like, if you throw a tracker through a portal, the beacon will only broadcast for a certain amount of time before it goes dark (returns to normal state once recovered)

oh, that's an interesting use case I hadn't really thought about.

right now that won't work, the beacon has to be attached to something else first. I'll consider adding this as a feature although I'm currently leaning in favor of keeping the current behavior.

I just want to throw one through a portal without sticking it to a folding chair first

Serious question... Can I track the tracking beacon without attaching it to something or someone? Probably not?

Yo dawg I heard you like space-time vortices.
