The S.S. Greatland was a small but mighty boat that had seen many changes throughout her years of service. Built in 1923, she was originally intended to be a coal tender for larger vessels. For many years, she dutifully carried out this task, supplying coal to ships that traversed the seas.

In 1941, as World War Two raged on, the U.S Navy saw the potential in the S.S. Greatland and decided to repurpose her as a coastal patrol vessel. She was refitted, her coal bunkers removed and replaced with cargo holds, and her Marconi wireless set replaced with a more modern radio. She became a crucial asset in the war effort, patrolling the waters and defending against enemy threats.

After the war, the S.S. Greatland was in rough shape. But she was not ready to retire just yet. She was refitted once again, this time as a small Great Lakes cargo freighter for smaller ports. She continued to sail the waters, transporting goods and connecting communities along the shores of the Great Lakes.

But in 1947, tragedy struck. The S.S. Greatland was caught in a fierce storm on the Great Lakes, her old age and accumulated rust making her vulnerable. The boat split in two, sinking quickly into the depths of the lake. Only the crew in the stern managed to escape in the lifeboat, with six people losing their lives in the disaster.

The wreckage of the S.S. Greatland still lies at the bottom of the Great Lakes, a silent reminder of her storied past. Her final resting place remains a mystery, waiting to be discovered by those who dare to venture into the depths
