Sharlebu's Skiritai Guard

Description
Skiritai Guard Unit Mod

Historical info
The Skiritai were a people subject to Sparta, similar to the Perioikoi. They came from Skiritis, a mountainous region in northern Laconia, on the border with Arcadia, between the rivers Oenus and Eurotas.

In times of war, they formed an elite light infantry corps, a "lochos" of about 600 men, complementing the citizen army of Sparta. According to Thucydides, athenian military and historian; they occupied the left flank, the most dangerous position for the hoplite phalanx. It is said that in battle they were the first to attack and the last to retreat.

They acted as scouts and night sentinels, in addition to participating in special operations in the form of night skirmishes, for which they painted their shields black, wore dark clothing and dyed their skin with charcoal powder to blend in with the veil of the night. According to the historian Diodorus of Sicily, during the Battle of Thermopylae, a small group of men infiltrated the enemy camp and reached the royal tent. Although Xerxes, the persian king, was not in the royal tent, his two brothers, the generals Avrokomis and Yperanthis, slept inside. The soldiers killed them both. After this great feat, they were tragically slaughtered by the persians. It is said that this infiltration group was composed of Skiritai.

During the Hellenistic period, Sparta was no longer the dominant force it had been in previous centuries. In this context, the specificity of groups such as the Skiritai was diluted or disappeared.

Other info
These fierce warriors, now depleted in numbers, undoubtedly saw better days. However, their service and glories of yesteryear, as well as their combat prowess in all types of terrain, remain an object of reverence and motivation for the spartans. The unit can be recruited only by Sparta from the Royal Barracks (level 4 military building) only in Grand Campaign. It can also be used in custom battles in Grand Campaign only by Sparta.

This unit can perform a myriad of roles on the battlefield. Since they served as scouts and sentries for the ancient spartan kings, their detection and concealment abilities are highly honed and in that sense, they are of great use in revealing enemy movements or infiltrating behind their lines.

Their offensive capacity is good and they have a great charge capacity, added to the fact that they carry javelins to throw from a distance, they are undoubtedly a unit to be feared. They can win a head-to-head against a wide variety of infantry units with relative ease, and with some micromanagement, they can certainly handle elite troops, even a general.

Their combined abilities provide a lot of diversity of options to take, as well as a powerful surprise factor. However, don't be overconfident: their defensive capabilities and light armor don't make them a good choice for prolonged combat. Use them wisely and they can change the course of the battle.

How to use
Just subscribe, download and activate through the Mod manager in the Game launcher.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In order to display unit text in-game, you must have your game set to english, any other language will display blank text. This is a limitation of the game engine that there is little that can be done around; while it is possible to translate mods, it is a tedious process and requires that all mods you use that add text must be translated and contained in one file, so there is no easy way to do it for everyone at the same time... Thanks, CA.
