Sharp weapons are pretty universally considered better than blunt weapons.
Sharp:
+ Can cut Smoker tongues
+ Instantly kills zombies and disables their collision
Blunt:
+ Can shove zombies that are slightly outside the range of damage
- Killed zombies will collide and "body block" you for almost a second after dying
As you can see, sharp has two upsides whereas blunt has one upside and one downside. Melee weapons are designed to help you carve your way through hordes like an icebreaker, and sharp melees are just better at doing that job.
Funnily enough, the reason sharp weapons disable zombie collision upon death is because of a glitch that never got fixed. That's just how it goes sometimes.
